Greetings from a newbie to this forum
I have hung out in the Sport Classic forum from the very beginning, when I purchased my '06 Sport 1000 monoposto.
But now I have good reason to start hanging out here too. I just purchased a '99 750 SS. It only has 3,268 miles on it, so it isn't even really broken in yet. I'm excited to get it out once I get the registration and insurance in place, have the mechanics go over it, and probably after putting on a new set of tires (don't trust 12 year old tires no matter how little they've been used).
I honestly have very little knowledge of this bike in general, and I hope to learn a bunch from all of you seasoned SS owners.
Here's a picture of my new toy.

Welcome to the SS side of the house , I too have a '99 750SS, Full Fairing on mine though. OH and 32k miles but love the bike.
Buying tires sounds like a good Idea, as well as having a mechanic doing a safety inspection as well as replace the belts.
Biggest thing is the safety inspection should point out areas that could be of concern. also check the tank for rust.

You have just bought yourself the best all-around bike Ducati ever made IMO. Since 1998 I've had two SS/SP's and now an '05 SS1000DS. I've commuted with them, ridden them around town, done 2-up weekends, done a 1,000 mi. day, and gone cross country with them. I'd guess I've put 100,000 mi. on the three of them. I have found them to be able to do whatever I asked of them and they have been reliable. Ya done good.

Hello, Looks very nice. I just purchased a SS too. I have the same issue with tires, but I believe mine are a few years old, and really how can you tell...

For both you guys needing new tyres, I highly recomend the Pirelli Diablo Rosso. I have found them to be very confidence inspiring on the road and the track and am currently getting really good milage from them.
The added bonus is you should be able to get them really cheap right now as they have been superseded by the new models.
Before buying anything else, change your tyres if in any doubt as to their condition. Rubber goes off after too many heat cycles or just age and if you don't have confidence in your tyres, or worse flase confidence, you aint going to have a good time riding. Possibly a really bad time skidding down the road on your arse.
Enjoy!

FWIW, I have been very happy with the Michelin Pilot Powers I've used on my SS1000DS and my 998's. Excellent tires IMO.

I have the Pirelli Diablo Rosso's on my Sport Classic and like them a lot. But the local dealer has a sale on the Michelin Pilot Power's, front and back installed for $399, so I will have them installed on the Supersport. I could save about $50 if I ordered the tires from Motorcycle Superstore, and then have them installed, but I want to give the local guys some business.
As I learn more about this bike, and as I searched through the threads on this forum, I've decide to switch to a 14T front sprocket. The verdict seems to be out on the need for a steering damper though. What do folks feel about the need for them?
