SS wanted?
I am contemplating trading the ole 996 for an SS, and am looking for advise about what you would consider to be the best model, year, and all the pros and cons concerning the SS.
I will still have the 998 for more agressive riding, and feel that adding an SS to the garage may offer a ride with a little more comfort for daily riding. Thanks

Well, you will first need to decide which side of the SS you want. >98<
I prefer the flat side models, but others prefer the newer look.
Here is a listing of the metamorphosis of the pre 98 models (click on "Model Year Updates" on the left of the screen). Obviously, the 98 FE is the most refined of that group.

I always felt that mine (#15) was a great tour bike. Best wishes Burt.

Unless you particularly like the older style carb model, might as well go straight for the 1000ss which were discontinued in 07. They are the final version of the ss with the most refined and powerful engine and electronics plus better wheels and suspension.
I love my 900ie but if I were buying again I would wait to find a good 1000 instead of spending money on the 900 to bring it up to 1000 spec.
My 2 cents.

In My humble opinion....get the later model 1000ds bike.
And by the way, just because it's an ss and not a superbike doesn't mean that it can't perform as such. In fact, most ss riders are the ones You got to look out for. SS bikes, and SS riders tend to be 'sleepers'. yeah, they're good for long rides, but at the same time they can kick ass on the track. ya can't go wrong with an SS.

Hey Burt
go for a post 1998 900ss. I really like the pre 1998 but the carbs and the ethanol in my mind are a bad mix.
I just bought a really clean unmolested 2001 900ss ie, if I could of found a 1000ss I would have bought that. But I'm really happy with my 900ss though. I too would like a second Ducati, 996

I haven't done a whole lot of mods yet mate other than changing the exhaust for a larger diameter better flowing system and a K&N filter. I'm about to spend a bunch of money on new suspension components from Cogent Dynamics and when it comes time to work on the engine I will be searching for a 1000ds motor to fit instead of spending a small fortune on working the 900 for a similar result.
There is heaps of info on engine work done to different 900s here on the forum from headwork, high comp/oversize pistons to converting the heads to dual spark etc... I think the consensus seems to be that it's a whole lot easier just to start with the 1000ds motor.
I don't know if you've encountered the rough fuelling issue at low RPM when the motor is really hot but even with some really good tuning work done by great mechanics it still appears at times and I'm becoming convinced that it is a limitation with the first gen ECUs on the 900. The 1000 doesn't suffer frm this problem as far as I'm aware.

Here ya go....New Haven, CT and you can stay with us. I know zero about this particular bike but agree the SS1000DS is the one...although I loved both my SS/SP's as well. Most people would consider this a higher mileage bike but if it has proper records I'd have no problem owning it. I put 30K on each of my SS/SP's and now have 15K on my '05 SS1000DS and expect to put many more miles on before having to do anything significant to it.

As a former Ducati Dealer, I always liked the '96-97 900SS/SP, but this was the end of the Cagiva era, so OEM parts varied sometimes. '96 had a silver frame, '97 gold. These 2 years also had the 3-gauge dash w/oil temp indicator. The last year '98FE was also cool, internal oil feed lines in the cylinder, and in silver only.
