Been thinking of an SS for my next bike...
A while ago I was looking at a 916 this collector/Ducati NUT!! in Rome had for sale and while my friend and I were in his garage, he started to show off the other bike, A 888 spo fully termi'd out.
Needless to say, when he started that thing, I bloody wet myself... which would have been embarrasing had it not been for the fact that everyone else had also bloody wet themselves! Best sounding bike on the Planet!!
Ever since, I've lusted after an 888 or at the very least a dual exaust Duke.... and yes I know my 748 is dual, but Im talking the single a side type dual. I also really like the look of the older SS'
It would be my once in a while bike... kinda the one you take down to the shops on a Saturday morning type of thing, but another Ducati-freak friend in Rome says they break.... a lot. But I bought his 748 and it behaves for me
Anyway... Im curious to know if any of you SS hardcores also own/have owned a 748/996/8/916 and how they compare. I'd also be curious to know how similar in sound (with the right pipes of course), say a '98 era 900ss would be to the 888 spo that made me wee.
Just pipe dreamin' here (no pun intended), but curious non the less.
Hope winter's treating ya'll better than it's treatin' me
J

I have owned a '97 SS/SP, '96 SS/SP, '02 998, '02 998S Bayliss, and now an '05 SS1000DS. I have to say that I have really loved each of those bikes. They all have that "on rails" handling that is so common to Ducati. Because the '96 SS/SP and the Bayliss were significantly modified they are probably not good comparisons. The '97 SS/SP, '02 998 and the '05 SS1000DS were basically stock. Just for some background. The '96 SS and the '05 SS are different basically due to the latter's DS motor. The '05 is faster and, thanks to FI, a bit easier to live with IMO. Although they all have a nice sound....and with the right gearing the 2V is a very nice motor......the 4V is really strong compared to either of the 2Vs. I absolutely love the 4V but am equally convinced that the 2V is a great street motor and easier to live with. I think one of the things I like about the 4V is that it has a "liquid cooled sound" to it that the 2V's air-cooled motor doesn't have. Sounds less "buzzy" and in a way deeper the way I hear it. Hope that addresses some of your questions.

Been at the track with 748s, 851s, 998s, 999s, 1098s and my 900 SS. Everyone I've talked to seems to think the 2V 900 with its air cooled motor, Silmoto full system and FCRs sounds the best of them all !

I agree. The best sounding Ducati are the 2 valve 900's.
I still remember the first time I heard that sound - it was back in 1985 and we were at the blimp hangars in Tillamook Oregon.

You need to have the right pipes for the best sound. I have carbon Staintune cans on mine, my wife has aluminum F1's on her's. Quite a difference in sound. The Staintunes have a nice "deep" tone. Aluminum cans sound too "tinny" to my ears. I have heard a 900 with Arrows carbon cans that sounded almost as good as mine. Still waiting to hear a 900 with either FBF or Termis!

Some FBF's were rebadged SilMoto, I pulled off the FBF badge's on mine because I hate stickers and SilMoto was stamped in the endcap. I have put a SilMoto header in front of SilMoto CF high mounts and I rattle windows and set off car alarms sounds perfect to me

I'm in the same boat.Very happy with the 998 in the garage no problems there. Thing is I bought a '06 SC earlier this year but after seeing a '98 900 FE I realized I'd bought the wrong bike.So the search is on for a nice example of the 900 SS. Money no object I'd buy an FE but kinda partial to the CR for some reason.
