Remove clutch push rod during clutch change?

Hi All,

i had been reading on how to change the clutch plate. And i ready to do my first virgin clutch plate change on my 996 bip.

I understand most of the time the clutch push rod will be stuck to the pressure plate during removal.

I would like to ask is it necessary to remove the push rod from the pressure plate and install only the rod during my installation or i can simply fit back the pressure plate with the rod?

I do notice on the clutch rod is cover with some engine oil and i should presume this is normal? I had check my basket and casing area with no trace of oil hence the big O-ring behind the basket is holding fine.

any advise is appreicated.

You might have better luck if you try over on the Superbike forum, though someone here may also be able to help you.

Good luck.

same clutch

Since a 996 has the same clutch as an SS, this is a fine place to ask ! No, you do not have to remove the push rod from the pressure plate, but it's not hard. Just whack it with a hammer and drift and it should pop right out of the pressure plate. Sometimes the bushing will stick to the end of the rod, but it can be persuaded to come off too. You may need to replace the bearing in the pressure plate (cheap and they don't last forever) and you'll definitely need to remove the pushrod for that. Don't know about the oil, but if there's not much, I wouldn't worry about it.

It helps to have a vise and some sockets, hairdryer or heat gun. Easy job though, just take your time.
