600ss Cam belt pulleys?

Just started to strip down my 600ss engine ready for a rebuild. Got the cam belt covers off to find two extra allen bolts in each of the cam pulleys. Anyone have any ideas what this is about?

Also concerned that the engine breather is wrong too, as it doesn't look like the one in the manual.

Second one first. Looking at some older parts manuals, the breather appears to be the same as that used on the Pantah 600SL and 750 Paso.

And 750 Santa Monica

The first could be that a previous owner left the allen bolts in there. On the ST2 heads I have here (I need the cams), 2 of the 4 holes are threaded and the various parts manuals I have don't show any bolts there. I have made a plate and have a couple of bolts ready to use if the cam pulleys are a little stuck.

Others may have more ideas - the breather is a little odd on a 600SS motor unless it is very early and the factory were using up some left over parts.

He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a pebble and rolling an ankle.

Hi,

It looks like someone put them there to keep the cam nut from backing out. I assume the nut was not replaced after removing the cam for some reason. I would remove the allens and replace the cam nut. They cost only a few dollars and having the extra weight spinning around on the end of your cam like that is not helping things...

Thanks for the advise guys.

Belt pulleys - I agree that the allen bolts look like they're just there to hold the cam nut on. A new nut is in order. (Hopefully that's it)

Breather - I've had a problem with oil in the airbox and this breather has no valve in it, so can only assume this is the problem. I think the bike has been raced by a previous owner and is not in great condition, hence the rebuild. Breathers are only about £10 on Ebay, so I'll get one of those too.

Had a look at 600ss engines for sale on Ebay and they all look to have this type of breather and the 750ss and 900ss a different one.

Can anyone shed any light on the difference?
