yeah,i searched, but ease my mind about the valve noise..
So,i have had many bike before, and i have built all sorts of automotive engines, that said,my duc sounds funny to me. How much valve noise should i actually hear on my 2000 750ssie without the fairings on? Both cylinders make the same chatter, and it seems loud to me,but may be normal for desmo. The bike has 5000 miles on it,and I have not checked the valves yet(i plan to in the winter). We have been having great weather so i have been riding her,I just dont want to hurt her The noise can be heard with a helmet on (barely) but without it is very distinct. Thanks in advance.

Well, I think it goes without saying, noises are extremely hard to diagnose over the forum. Add in the fact that noises are subjective anyways. First suggestion is just do a quick valve check and see what you've got...but I have a feelin you already know this.

Yeah,i know...just asking really if desmo makes a more mechanical(audible) sound than what im used to. I also removed the charcoal canister today and it was full of water, the breather was also full of white foamy shwag. I am going to change the oil again as i have the cloudy sight window. Short trips to work in 45 degrees never gets her up to temp.

If you bought this bike used in PA with harsh winters I would change belts before riding that bike!! Sounds like that bike had been sitting, Seaform would also be on my list to clean out fuel system. imo You don't want to "Eat a Valve"
Don"t burn your hands but try to clean your oil when its HOT to help get all or any water that may be in your system, maybe 1000 mile change twice. The bike is 11 yrs old it need TLC clean/lube axles etc.

+1 to SeaFoam.
What's this about clean/lube axles? My bike is 10 years old as well (had 1000 miles on it).

The cloudy oil sight is not unusal for these bikes. You'll need to take it out for at least a couple of hours to clear it up; possibly more in 45 degree weather.

Well my bike is a 1999 I'm 2nd rider of bike bought in 2004 and yes once a year I clean and lube if needed(lol) frt/RR axles, swing arm on my bike. harsh weather conditions and dirt from the roads can get things a little dirty, and a bike that has been sitting in a un-heated garage with 1000 miles on it I would clean lube, belts plugs oil once or twice because cold long winters are bad for sitting bikes. imo And it gives me something to do during the winter, matter of fact we are getting 4 to 8" of snow tonight.............................
One other thing that I would do to a bike that has been sitting spray some WD40 in each cyl and cold crank it with plugs out then change your oil/filter.
PA gets the same weather as me

-Whoa,cmon man,it has been 60 here all week The bike is from delaware, and the belts are on their way as i dont have a time frame on the current ones. I will be checking the valves later this month.
-Was really just wondering if Ducatis inherently had a more mechanical sound than im used to coming from the heads
-This bike has never had it so good...It is all cleaned and lubed, and seafoam was the first thing i did to it(after i changed the filter and pump-why i got it cheap) I love my new baby, big plans for her.

To answer your quwstion...
I've never noticed what I thought was valve noise, even when my track bike badly needed a valve adjustment (replaced 6 of 8 shims). Intake, exhaust and of course the rattly clutch make a lot of noise. Being air cooled, you may be hearing stuff that a water cooled engine would mask. That said, the factory service limits on the valve clearances are pretty liberal, so I doubt you will hurt anything if you ride it a bit with them out of spec. Belts are another story; it's good you are replacing them immediately.

Take a long screwdriver put it on the head near the valve train and then put the handle against your ear. If it's really valve train noise you should hear it very clearly then.
When I got my bike I actually through the bottom end on it was totally shot. I was hearing this god awful banging. Turns out the PO had left the clutch plates in so long that the cogs had shrunk about 3mm overall. So there was a TON more play between the clutch basket and the plates and it was the source of the loud banging.
