A deal, or no? ('02 SS for $4999 on CycleTrader)
Hey folks. Your thoughts, if you have a moment? I'm nowhere near the location of this bike, so I'd be spending some money to ship it. Dealer states 2428 miles. I can't imagine too much horrible could have happened to it in a couple thousand miles. I'm loving the SS bikes, and kind of itching to buy. I would definitely want to see it up close first, but wouldn't be practical in this situation. I'd probably just do a lot of yapping with the dealer and then make a decision. But just curious on everyone's thoughts if you are so inclined to spend the time commenting. The price seems right to me, but I am surely a novice. It's on CycleTrader, located in Colorado. Here's the link... 2002 Ducati 900 Supersport, Loveland CO - 100297924 - Cycletrader.com
Thanks,
Rusty

What happened to the original red front wheel? Did this have a superbike front end put on?
The swingarm was changed?
Without more details, I get the feeling that some of the negative history is not included in the description.
$5K to me doesn't sound like a steal especially when you add in the shipping costs. I gotta think you can find one closer.
You'd be surprised how much damage can be done in 2500 miles...

I love some of these sales pitches these guys make in the descriptions sometimes...hillarious.
Are we sure that swingarm didn't sneak onto some of the later 900's? It came out in '03 anyways. I agree with you, just ruling out the potential. Good catch though, and would be my first thought. If it was changed, it's definitely an upgrade.
There was no original red front wheel. Only the senna came with red wheels. I'm guessing the red wheel on the back is a swapout or was painted; either way, the red wheel on the rear is the odd man out, not the grey one on the front. Front end appears completely SS stock, including the grey wheel.
Either way, items like this, especially from some moto shop make it worth investigating. I don't think it's an unfair price if everything is legit, especially if the swingarm and rear wheel were an upgrade vice a crash repair. But even crash repairs can be done just right, so...

Im with the other guys on this the price seams steep given that they couldnt even put matching wheels on the bike who knows without going and seeing it in person which part of the bike was replaced whether the previous owner either didnt finish painting the wheels, they were exchanged, or worse the bike was damaged and thats what they got to replace the damaged parts. Id pass you should be able to find one closer hell mmarsden's bike is already one thousand cheaper from his post.

Hey everyone, thanks a bunch for the messages and valuable input. I definitely caught on to the shallow / juvenile content of the dealer’s write-up and that did send a flag for me as well. Almost like they are someone either hiding some things or just simply not knowing what to write about the bike. And the rear red wheel was a turn-off for me and I forgot to ask you all about that in my original post. Anyway, good things to know. I understand when bikes get to be this sort of age they aren’t necessarily going to be perfect. But if it were my bike I was selling, someone would be getting it darn near perfect. My ‘99 Concours I sold in 07 with 36K miles was extremely well-cared for with no maintenance left undone. So that’s the sort of previous ownership I am looking for. On the other hand, I’m not looking to spend $10K on a bike. But the $5K range seemed like a good start.
Thanks for the mention on your 800 mmarsden; although I’m kind of leaning toward red if possible. Superficial I know, but I just like the red.
Mblaster, I see the one on Craigslist you are speaking of. Too bad he/she is on the opposite coast and states he refuses to ship. That indeed looks like a nice bike, especially for the price.
I think the big take-away here for me is that I’ll do best to find bikes within driving distance so I can check them out. I guess the other part is I better tell my wife I started looking. That’ll go over well.
Glad I found this forum folks. Thanks again for all the input.
