Clutch slave rebuild question...

So,my slave was leaking. duh. The bike is a 2000 750ssie with just 5k on the clock so my thinking was dry seal. I do a bunch of research, and budget is basically zero until i pay the bike off(paid $2500 and it is minty). I see everybody recommends the nice replacements like Evoluzione but i cant afford this just yet,but i do se they make an upgrade piston/seal setup. I call them up and the guy is awesome on the phone and tells me that this solution may not work because of Ducatis poor design and the bore is usually fubar(but he will return it and give credit toward a whole new unit, very nice). I order the piston kit,and get mine off tonight to find it is pretty worn.

So i proceed to take some steel wool to it(1000) then some 800 grit and wet sand it,lastly i use some mothers to polish it up. It now looks like chrome(see pic). So the question is,do you guys think i am just wasting my time? Will this work? thanks, and thanks for having such a great forum

Also,a bad pic of the bike, just because i love it

I know budget is a concern, but really the Evolozune is the way to go. $180. Once you see it in the box you will say "Why did ducati not do this in the first place" The cost will surely be offset by having no headaches or being stuck on the side of the road with a failed slave. Also the smoothness and ease of pull on the level is a vast improvement over the stock slave. Save your pennies and get the aftermarket. You will be glad you did.

I did the evoluzione piston with double seal kit with no problems. Very happy with results. I never thought the clutch was stiff in the first place though. The only thing I will warn you about (too late) is that over polishing the bore may cause it to not seal. This has happened to me on car master cylinders before. I touched the bore with some 0000 grade steel wool and flushed the cyl. with wd40. good time to upgrade to a braided line too. But at least flush your master and line BEFORE you mount and bleed the slave. Tiny black bits in the flushed fluid (use a clear jar) point to the line deteriorating internally.

You can VERY EASILY find a replacement, aftermarket, shiny slave for half that... I find used oberone and yoyo slaves all the time.

I bought an Evo off of ebay for $80, granted, its not free, but considerably less. Also didn't the newer slave pistons have a dual seal?

Installed the Evoluzione upgrade piston in my stock slave today and it works perfect! Very nice. And no,mine had a spring and a single seal, new one has dual seals and no spring.

Thanks for the info. I saw those pistons on Evoluzione's site and they are only $30. I thought I'd try one since I am trying to keep my "new" FE as stock as I can. My track bike is the money pit .

superboosted, How's the pull on the clutch lever now? is it still a workout, or is it lighter?

The aftermarket piston in the stock cylinder won't change the force needed to pull, as you are not changing the diameter of the cylinder. The aftermarket cylinder which is bigger in diameter will however.

I too did just the Evo piston upgrade- albeit on a carby. It has worked fine for me. As stated above though- no difference in cluthch lever effort.
