rear brake rotor?
I have a Nichols aluminum rear brake rotor (no longer made ), on my track bike which I don't (can't?) use much. Lately when riding my SS/FE on the street, I notice I use my rear brake enough that I think I need to ditch the aluminum rotor on my track bike, and get something I can actually use more. Anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight, rear rotor for a track SS? Yoyodyne advertises a titanium one , and Braketech has a full floater coming out soon (or available now?). Suggestions? TIA!
Joe

Greetings:
The Al and Ti rear rotors are very lightweight indeed. However they are meant to be used sparingly. I almost bought one of the Yoyodyne Ti rear rotors a looong time ago. It would be very trick to have it on there but could not justify the cost for a "consumable" part. Some time ago, I bought an EBC rear rotor for an R6 and lightened myself considerably. I enlarged the holes, cut the hub braces and took it to a friend to make it 2mm thinner on his surface grinder. The result was a very lightweight steel rotor. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ricky

Thanks, Ricky, it's beautiful, but I don't think I want to modify one.

I had a Braketech full floating iron rotor on my track bike . Really liked it . Never weighed it but it couldn't be too heavy since it's mostly holes Unfortunately my caliper pistons stuck and toasted it. Went looking for a new one and they're NLA since they're coming out with a new style . It's an axis design like their front rotors . Alas I was told a few weeks ago from the guy at Braketech that they won't be available until after the first of the year in a bolt pattern to fit our old SS style hubs . I think I'll wait for one of those . Will probably also get one for my street SS . Send them an email to get on the waiting list so that along with mine they'll know there is some demand for these things

I hear that all the time. Or "Take a sh*t and lose 5 lbs." Well, I weigh 145 lbs. (5' 10"), so if I lose much weight, I'd be too weak to ride . Besides, I don't want anything as light as I have now, just maybe nicer than stock (lighter, cooler to attract more chicks, etc.). I think I'll wait for the new BrakeTech. I love their front iron rotors. Although it is for a track bike (my street ride is quite stock), it is, as jman900 implied, not critical .

Galfer wave
I have a Galfer Wave on the back of my '98. Didn't weigh it, but it felt lighter. The package the rotor comes in says you have to use their pads. I called, and the person there said it wasn't critical. Used the rotor with my (slightly) used stock pads. VERY grabby when hot. The Galfer rotor is thicker than stock.
Called Galfer and got the pad # for my year and ordered them from the local shop. They didn't fit. Was at an open house at a local bike shop and someone had a new set of Galfer pads in the package. Bought them. Dumb luck, they fit.
Haven't ridden the bike with the new pads.
If the rotor is happier, I might consider doing a little surface grinder weight loss program.
