MS Productions CF hugger - wider than stock one?

I put a 180 tyre ( Dunlop Sportmax Q2 ) on the rear, and of course if rubs the stock plastic hugger slightly on both sides.

Does anyone have an MS Productions carbon Fibre one, and know if it is slightly wider inside than the stock one? I am hoping that as the carbon fibre is thinner that the plastic, the difference will be on the inside so the tyre won't rub.

A few things about tyres and huggers.

Even though a tyre may be 180 or 190, 200, 170, 160 etc. the profile can be different for each width. I have run various Michelin, Pirelli and Metzeler 180 on my 2001 (designed for 170) and the gap has been different between the tyre and the hugger.

CF huggers - normal practice would be that the stock hugger would be used to make a plug then a mold, so I expect the CF one's internal position/profile would be close to stock.

You could try using washers or fibre washers as spacers between the hugger and the swinging arm to lift it a bit to increase/make a gap between tyre and hugger.

Big question is where does it rub?

With mine, even though it never rubbed, I used a jigsaw to cut off all the ugly side bits so the hugger just covered the tyre profile.

Hi Richard

The tyre rubs the hugger on the sides i.e.: the very widest part of the tyre on each side is carving a nice radius in each side of the hugger.

That is what happened to me when my hugger mounting cracked and the tyre carved a "nice radius" after the hugger dropped onto the tyre.

For me these lines were brilliant/perfect to use as markers to cut the crap out of the useless bits of the hugger.

Look on the bright side of it and then cut away. Dunno about your model, but the stock hugger on my 01 model looked like Grandma's wellie boots!
Give me stilettos any day.

I also shortened the hugger as well.

I don't want to cut it up, I want to keep it original, and probably the next set of tyres will put a 170 back on there so the hugger will fit without fouling the tyre. But that'll be 5 years or so before a new tyre goes on, so in the mean time, the popo are out to get me with a canary.

Michelin did not rub on mine(180) but the Dunlop did (180) I like the Michelin tire better.

Spacers work

Had the same issue with my old hugger, though the rubbing was just one one side. Some thoughtful placement of plastic washer spacers fixed the problem, though I had to be careful about tightening them in the right way to alleviate the 'twist'.

I've played around with washers and tightening sequences to get the correct "twist" and get it to sit squarely, but really I'm flogging a dead horse. The tyre rubs both side of the hugger, and washers will only lift the hugger, not make it wider.

Have you considered going back to who supplied/fitted the 180 and doing an exchange deal to put on a 170.

It would have to be a lot cheaper and less angst than buying a CF hugger and not knowing if it will work.

CF huggers are not cheap in general.

Whilst I have had 180s on mine since the first change, I am going to go back to a 170 to see if it tips in better. After all, it was fitted with a 170 stock, so presume Duc knew what they were doing, which is not always the case when we get into the intricacies of our bikes!
