Superbike prices...
I've been noticing prices of the older Superbikes recently and wonder about something. The 916 seems to be holding prices from the $5K to $7K range. The 996 even up to the 2001 year can be had for the mid $8K range. The 998 seems to still be up there around $11K or. I guess it seems to me the 916's have leveled off. The 996's are dropping at a good rate still and the 998's are dropping a little now.
I'm noticing this in trying to get some ideas of the prices to sell my 916 or 996 for. Whichever one I sell. Trying to figure out what I'll have to spend to make the 996 track ready as opposed to making the 916 up to par with the 996. Also trying to figure if there's any reason to keep the 916 over the 996. I don't really see any other than I don't care as much if it gets messed up as is bound to happen to track bikes.

Easiest question of the week. 916. 916. 916. Although I guess as soley a track bike kinda changes things.

If you have a mental hadicap with throwing away the 996 then sell it. Don't worry too much about absolute speed on the track. The biggest shortcoming to low lap times is the rider/driver, then the suspension, then the motor. Keep in mind that no matter how much power you have, you'll always want more. You have to draw the line somewhere.

The 916 I have is not the first year and it's a plain biposto so I don't think there's an advantage to holding onto it for collectible reasons. I don't really care anyway unless it was an SPS or R model.
Actually the reason I favor the 996 is not the extra power. The 996 comes with the 5 spoke wheels already and the Ohlins rear. Whereas the 916 has 3 spokers and Showa in the rear. The Showa I'm sure is still a great shock but the Ohlins is a better starting point. In addition the 5 spoke wheels are easily better. Here's my thought process.
1. Ohlins about $1000K
2. 5 spokers used $800
When you start adding up what it takes to get the 916 on par with the 996 you end up with what I could sell the 996 for. So it's like might as well keep the 996.
I have rashed up bodiwork, fuel tank, etc for the 996. So other than prepping it more for the track it's probably ready to go.
As for any mental handicap I think honestly that will always exist a little with anyone who is riding a Ducati. That's one disadvantage to riding one.

Good deal. Sounds you you have some good logic, as long as you don't have a hang-up about trashing the 996. My logic about going to the track is that if you can't afford (mentally) to loose everything, then don't go. Since the Duc is your new track buddy you should sell me the Aprilia (cheap).

Well there is a bit of hang up about trashing any Ducati. I will admit in it's present form I would hate to trash the 996. I would have to track prep it to feel comfortable.
The Duc has been my track buddy. The Aprilia is my new one as I wanted a lightweight bike that was a 2-stroke. Wanted to use it to help me learn cornerspeed. Having a tough time on the Ape as it's throttle is heavy compared to the Duc.
