Aftermarket chip for 748 Superbike...any suggestions?

Hey guys,

I have a 2001 Ducati 748 Bi-posto. While the engine remains stock, I have installed a Full Termi system (I believe eliminating the cats) as well as larger intake runners, new nose fairing with larger intake ports and a under-the-tank style foam filter. While I am looking to do an 853 kit in the future, the engine's internals are presently stock. I am at this time however wishing to install a new custom chip. The bike runs very rich and at times suffers to two to three days of hesitation and miss-firing at 6.5k to 8k rpm range. You can clearly see that the bike is running rich from the black smut on the exhaust tips and smell of fuel. Though this was the best a Fresno Ducati dealership could tune it after they did a rebuild on the bike. She currently sports a Ultimap chip, and I have been told that this is not appropriate for my set up. The dealer also said in the past that they found a bent prong on the chip which was causing issues with trying to get it to work properly, affecting their ability to tune it correctly. Can anyone offer me advice as to the best chip to install with my current mods? Also, can the chip just be dropped in, or will it require tuning thereafter? If the problem is not the chip, should I just try a different shop for re-setting of the air/fuel mixture?

There is presently a Ducati Performance chip available on Ebay for "use with aftermarket silencers"....is this a good pick? Or is it best to buy these only as new items?

I appreciate the feedback!

Thomas

Check the date on your chip. It may be inappropriate for your year 748. Also, another memeber here did not have a good experience with the Ultimap chip, it too was dealer installed and when he replaced it, it was for previous year that had different size throttle bodies, different cams and should not have been installed to begin with. Check the 748R "driveablilty" thread......sean

Two chips only I will suggest.

FIM (whatever their latest offering is): But only if you don't care to be able to tune or live by a dyno tuning facility that has the EXPENSIVE FIM software or handheld programmer.

I am currently running FIM ('091' I think?) in my 2000 748 Bip and quite frankly the chip does an awesome job! It got rid of so many little bothersome issues and really helped the hole between 4-6000 RPM. FIM tunes individual cylinders and richens the one that tends to run lean and visa versa. Very cool unless you want to tune the baby, then you are almost S$%T out of luck.

I will most likely retain my FIM in my tool box and switch to my other suggestion...

PowerCommander lll USB: Friends all over the world can send you a map to try because the software comes with the unit. PLug and Play! I do this all the time with my friends bikes. Plus there are a huge number of dyno facilities in the US that will tune your bike with this system. Better driveability and power will result. My friend just had his BUSA dyno tuned and picked up 8 HP at the top end will getting a flat air/fuel curve throughout the powerband. He loved it! If you make radical changes, have it tuned again and again. Unlike myself, who is currently stuck with the FIM that just happens to run well so far no matter what I have done (filters and exhaust for instance).

I too, do not have resonators since I ditched half my system for something much larger (57mm ...read 2 1/4 inches). So far the FIM chip is really good but I would like to dyno tune my bike soon without driving to OHIO!
