Need technical help with my aftermarket rearsets

Let me premise by saying the bike shifted fine prior to the installation of the rearses.

I have Gilles rearsets on my 01 996. They were professionally installed after I botched a few things

Anyway, I am now having trouble finding neutral while the bike is running and the 1-2 shift while the bike is under load feels terrible (notchy).

The bike will shift into neutral easily when the engine is off.

I have had rearsets on many bikes and never had any issues. My tech told me that the leverage on the rearsets can create issues like this. He said his race bike did the exact same thing. He suggested putting it in neutral while the bike is rolling. That works fine, but I got caught in a traffic jam last night and that trick won't work in that situation with stop and go traffick. I thought my left hand was going to fall off

Is there an adjustment that can be made? Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

wish I had a definite answer or solution to your problem, but I do not. If I had to guess, It sounds like the lever ratio changed for the quicker; meaning that the bike shifts with less movment of the lever, at the expense of added effort.

Personally, I use a Yoyodyne or Acculign set with a reverse shift lever that attaches directly to the shift shaft of the engine. Very solid setup to me.

My only experience with Gilles rearsets has been on my buddy's CBR600RR, and although they are beautiful to look at, I was not too impressed with their feel. The Ducati setup maybe different, but his had alot of flex in them.

The Evo clutch slave may contribute. If the lever action is alot lighter, it's at the expense of less clutch travel, possibly dragging the clutch and causing those symptoms

Thanks for the info.

There is definately no flex with this particular Gilles setup. It's very snug with no slop. Everything just barely fit. This application connects directly to the shift shaft as well. This is why I'm kind of surprised that I'm having any sort of issue as the overall operation and fit is very similar to stock. I had a set of Gilles on my ZX10 and the operation was great.

I'm starting to point my finger at the slave. My tech suggested I try moving my clutch position from 4 to 1 to give it more clutch clutch travel. I haven't ridden it yet as it was raining, but the shifter moved a lot easier from 1 to N or 2, and I could actually catch neutral if I played with it for a second or two. Previously it took a lot of effort just to pop it up from 1 to find neutral (which it never would while the engine was running and would just skip to 2).

So seeing as more travel helped, are there any more adjustments I can make to dial this in?
