Surflex Slipper Clutch Plate Stacking Order (748)

Hey guys,

After having my engine rebuilt by a Ducati Dealer, I experienced dramatic clutch slippage on my fairly new slipper clutch. After a quick tear down of such, it appears as though it may have had been installed incorrectly, therefore glazing the clutch plates beyond repair. Due to this, I just purchased a new set of Surflex plates to install. Though, unfortunately, anyone who has bought Surflex plated knows they come without installation directions. My problem that now exists is the following. I was instructed to install the plates in the order that they came, however, this is simply impossible as the stack height is so high that the teeth on the pressure plate cannot connect with those on the hub, resulting in no clutch at all. When comparing the new clutch plates to the old "glazed" stack, the new one is quite a bit thicker. Therefore, as I understand, my only option was to eliminate plates until they would function. While this has allowed me to ride again, I still feel as though there is some slight slippage happening under throttle. Such as, it is unlikely that I could pull a wheelie in its current state. Not that I really care to do so, but I want my installation to be correct to assure proper wear and life. Therefore, can anybody designate the proper order of the surflex plates? There is a initial plate which I understand to be some kind of retainer that is applied to the hub before the actual plates are...but then what follows? Friction or smooth plates? In what order? Finally, should it be a friction or smooth plate that connects with the pressure plate? Any assistance in a solution would be greatly appreciated by those with this experience.

Cheers,
Thomas

I have not seen a Surflex slipper unit in person, but every other one I have seen starts with a friction plate first, and ends with a steel plate at the pressure plate. My Yoyodyne works great with a 1mm gap between the pressure plate and the stack. I use a special Barnett pack with thinner steel plates that allows use of an extra friction plate.
