Ducati 996 or 998 or 916 Engine

I have an engine case with upper. How can I tell what size cc engine it is? I measured the piston diameter and it was 996 or 998. Can I tell just by looking at the stampings or the ser# ???

Piston on 996 is 98mm. The 998 is 100mm.

What do you mean by "upper?"

Just post a couple of pictures of what you have.

You are comparing two completely different engine designs here. You can rule out one easy just by looking at the cylinders and heads. Are they desmoquattro or testastretta cylinders/heads?

If they are testastretta then it's a 998 or newer. If they are desmoquattro cylinders/heads then it is a 996 or older. Either way, based on that bore size and piston stroke should tell you what you need regarding engine displacement.

If you are trying to identify a complete engine, why not look at the engine serial number?

It almost sounds stupid, I know.

On my 2002 900SSie engine I can see that it is 904 cc, 2 valve per cylinder air cooled (ZDM904A2XXXX).

Well it's certainly not a 998 lol. Case finish looks like sandcasting hmmm. Intriguing. Bore looks like 748 though. 88mm is small.

996 is 98mm bore, 916 is 94mm, 748 is 88mm and those look like Desmoquattro heads. So a 748 of some description.

On bikes shipped to the US, the number stamped on the engine starting with SB5 means it is a 996. SB8 is 916, SB3 would be a 748. I have found some info that indicates SB5 may also mean 998 or even 999, but I am not 100% sure of that. In any case, those are DQ heads, so it is a 996.

The X after the SB5 means it is a 1999 model year.

The 88MM bore on the cylinder you show must be from a 748. Does it fit the cases you have? My understanding is the 996 had a larger stud spacing than the old 916 and 748 cases. Something is odd if that cylinder fits a case with an SB5 number on the ID. Unless, and i have not heard of this before, the 748 inherited the same 996 stud spacing when they replaced the 916.

YES Both upper cylinders fit perfectly. It could also be that its not all original in the sense that someone might of put it together..At the end of the day they all fit. I'm thinking of selling it but didn't know much about it. I have a 748 Frame that I might see if it fits.
