As this is my first Duc, and I am looking for the best value as well as riding experience for mostly road but some track, what is your informed opinion please. Thanks a million.

I have a 2008 1098 and the S really wasn't the best value for how I ride and what I intend to do with the bike. 2009 on the other hand is another story. If you can get an S then do. Basically you are getting a 1098R for about $18000 less and only down 10 or so hp. I wish I would have waited until this year in all honestly. Love the 1098 but also love the 1198S (except the new wheels on it) and the Street Fighter as well (S of course).

You're in the same boat I was in. I had planned on a jap liter bike (r1). Then I saw the new 1198 and had to have it. Even the base model is more than I had planned on paying, so I thought what the hell. May as well go for the full package. After all the DTC is worth it. Plus (my opinion), I think the 1198s looks a lot better after seeing them both in person. I personally like the frame color and wheels a lot.
Sorry, but my camera sucks so the color is funky.

My guess is the DTC comes in real handy in Alaska. I agree with you on all points!
