What happens if you dont use an Airbox (996)?
Basically I dont have a spare airbox and want to assemble my bike for casual riding. I have an ITG airfilter. Would anything happen if I dont use the airbox? One or two HP loss wont effect me. I have another way to retain the fuel tank pin up front too.
Any thoughts?

If you need an airbox that bad, I'll sell you my OEM red one for the cost of shipping. I suspect if you ran the bike without one, your bike would run like complete crap.

First of all, the air box is semi structural. That's why a CF one will stiffen up the chassis a bit. Beyond that, the airbox creates a specific air velocity that is required for the engine to run. It is called a resonator (there is a name, just eludes me right now) Not only would your motor run like crap it would probably not run much at all under load.

I think the word you're searching for is Heimolz resonator. Try a search 'round here for info. I know Shazaam put up quite a bit of info on it.
I wouldn't run it without one but if you do why not dyno the sucker? I imagine you won't have anything on the bottom end but if you're going to be the gunea pig you might as well make it useful for the masses.

Haha awesome answer.
Thanks for the offer Daniel.
It sounds like this isn't going to be a good idea. It just seems that using an ITG filter which completely surrounds the velocity stacks would make it doable.
On Heimolz not sure, if Helmholtz resonance is the same thing (according to wiki):

A port that is too small in area for the chamber volume will "choke" the flow while one that is too large in area for the chamber volume tends to reduce the momentum of the air in the port.
|
So I guess the air will lose its momentum it built in the runners and thus effect bike performance? I was thinking literally the worlds biggest air box alas that Heimolz dude and his stupid airflow in containers theories.
The other project bike is probably much further down the line than I have convinced myself so Ill look for a CF one for it.

The Dyno run would likely cost more than an ebay airbox..........

I had an about 4mm gap between the fuel tank and the airbox seal. The bike run poorly, backfired through the intake, run lean I guess, even with this small gap.
Removing the airbox all together would probably require some serious fuel mapping changes.
