848 or 1098?
I'm a new memeber to this site, and have picked up alot of great info already... I haven't rode in quite some time and am looking to buy another bike, either a 848 or 1098, but I'm really not up on the current bikes enough to be comfortable in making a decision yet...
Back when I was riding, the 600's and 750's didn't really have enough "grunt" to really perform all that well with me on it as I'm a competitive athlete and carry alot of weight (240lbs+)... So here's my wondering.. I know the Duc's have alway's been torqueier bikes, but does the 848 have enough power to not become bogged down with a heavier rider or is the 1098 the better choice in this circumstance?

Havent ridden an 848 but with 134 HP compared to the 160 and of the 1098 you will have more "grunt" with the bigger bike. The 848 weights 11 pounds less but that wont make up the 26 HP difference and the 1098 has 89 lbs of torque. I have the full Termi system on mine which adds around 12 more HP and it is way more than I can use plus it has a very cool top end rush. Both are very cool and will be a lot of fun.

The 848 makes power equal to the '03-'04 999. Even a big guy like yourself shouldn't find the bike lacking in power. The 1098 makes even more...which may be dangerous for a bit if you have been off sportbikes for a while.
I think I would go with the 1098, but I've been on sportbikes consistently since 1988 (shit, I'm old!).
Sit on both, test ride both (if your dealer is high-volume enough to grant test rides), and decide for yourself. No one here can tell you what will fit what's in between your ears the best, and that is really what it comes down to.

I am 5'11, 175lbs.... I have an 07 1098 basic model with termi system, tons of carbon fiber.... I am so impressed with this bike i can hardly stand not being on it! For the track, this bike is unreal! Both bikes are amazing but i can tell you after riding and 848 for just a little, i wouldn't trade mine in for the world!

+1
In my transition from the 749 --> 1098, I've noticed how much more careful I need to be with the throttle b/c every little bit gives power. For example, one time I was making a turn (going around 10 or 15mph) and I hit a small bump that I didn't see (it was at night) and I jerked the throttle a tad and the bike lunged a tad.

Awesome, thank you guys... Been doing a lot of reading, and considering what you guys said, I think the 848 is the way to go... I'm thinking the 1098 is too much for me since I've been off a bike for almost 8 years now (like desmo2 said), and I'm just looking to have some fun on the streets with my buddies, nothing crazy...
Plus, from what I've been reading, the 848 is a much easier bike to handle, and I can always tune up the power with after market gear... That, and the Pearl White they offer on the 848 is just so beautiful... You guys think that's a fair assessment? And how much easier/better does the 848 really handle in comparison to the 1098?

to a certain extent. YOU control the bike, it does not control you. don't be scared out of a 1098, it's a tremendous motorcycle. if you want a lighter and perhaps easier bike to ride, get the 848. if you want the enjoyment of having more power and torque with a small amount of added weight, get the 1098.
the 1098 in itself is not "dangerous."

Have you ridden an 848 yet? I've ridden both, you can't tell the difference between the two. I went really fast on both the 1098 and 848 and seriously, no street in the US besides a track, could take the power the 1098 put out. Even guys club racing are backing off a bit and buying 848's because you don't really need that much power.
848 with a decent set of pipes and dyno tuned, will put out more power then ANY stock liter ducati besides the 999R. If you need more power then Ducati has EVER had on a street bike up until the 999R... well, you might not know how to ride a bike very well... lol

I'm also a fairly big athlete at 230lbs. I haven't been riding all that long so I'm sure you know more about riding than I do. I just recently went with the 848 after debating the same question you have before you. I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. It has plenty of power and I wouldn't need any more than it offers. So I would say go with the 848.
