Difference between 748S and 748SPS?
Hey guys,
is there any difference in engines between the two? which is the most powerful 748 available? apart from the 'R' version....
I'm looking to buy one and there is one for sale with 22,000km's done on it, had its 20k service about 1500 back....

The 748 S model basically is the same as the base model 748 but has slightly better suspension parts. The 748 SPS is the euro race version, much better all over, a straight up race bike. Difficult to find, on the rare side. In the USA you have the 748R , the race version of the 748, which did come street legal for the USA. I am not sure if the SPS was ever USA legal. The SPS is much more $$ and time to service, everything is super tight racing tolerences.

Do a search. I´ve answered this question a half dozen times.
They are diffrent, the SPS is the hotter of the 2.

I was told that the 748R was never street legal. To make it street legal you had to put lights and a couple other things on the bike and try to get it passed as a street bike. I may be wrong, I know there are a few 748R's around the bay area that have been converted.

The 748 was actually street legal via the street kit, but on the title it does say Race only with can be a issue at some DMV's.

Technically the R was not street legal in the USA. This was mostly due to the fact the engine did not have EPA certification. So ducati imported them as race vehicles. In 2002 US customs cracked down on Ducati and made them remove the lights in order to qualify as race vehicles. The '00 and '01 bike came with lights and were basically the same as as the ROW model.

And didn't the dealers who sold them, put in lights? But if that was the case, how can you register something which doesn't pass EPA spec? Its an interesting loop-hole thats all.

.
I would guess the same way people register Dirt bikes to make them street legal. I know all you had to do was add lights, a mirror, and horn here in california go to a CHP office and have them approve it , then go to the DMV at one time to make an off road bike legal,I would think it would be the same for the R series, but California in the last few years has cracked down on that.....
