Lightbulb Insight on unusual tank on 916????

I have a '95 model 916. The fuel tank is slightly larger than normal. Over the years I've been unable to get any answers on how or why my bike has this feature... I've included some pictures where you can see that there are slight indentions by the damper and the tank is @ 1.5 inches wider than normal- a full 16 inches wide. The wreath decal on the top of the tank was removed a couple years ago when the tank was repainted. Any insight on how this tank may have come about would be greatly appreciated!!!

I believe all 916 tanks are wider. Pre 99 748 & 916 tanks are a full 16" across the top. When I bought my 748 in 99 They listed a redesigned tank as one of the changes from the previous year.

I'm not sure about the dampener groove though.

It is a steel tank- we used a magnet to verify. Also, I havent seen any 916 with a 16" wide tank, not saying they don't exist.... Anyone else have a tank like this?

My tank is 16" wide, but it doesn't have the indentations for the damper.

I replaced the original narrow tank on my 99 748 with a Ducati Performance 916 carbon fiber tank. The carbon tank is 16" without the damper groove.

The wider carbon 916 tank I have has the same capacity as the 99 OEM tank I replaced. I just mesured both tanks. The carbon 916 tank it 16" across the top and about 8" high from the airbox. The 99 OEM tank is 15" across the top and about 8 1/2" high from the airbox.

I was told by ferracci that Ducati redesigned the tank for 99 to give more bar clearence and reduce damage if the bike was laid down.

I just measured my 95 916 tank...16 inches across. I think this is standard
