Nichols Flywheel Impression

Hey everyone. I had Nichols install their light weight flywheel installed over the weekend and just wanted to give my impressions. The bike seems very eager to rev now and the throttle response is awesome. I also read about the reduced gyroscopic effect and I did notice it abit. The bike leans over much easier now.

As for ridability I did not notice any degradation. The bike has not stalled at all on me. I did notice you had to be a little smoother on the clutch from a dead stop. Overall I am very happy with the flywheel.

Good to hear and it sounds like a worthwhile upgrade. If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for the part and for the labor? It may be something I'd consider in the future as well.

thanks,
Aleks

Alex,

Nichols is just a few miles from you in San Jose, up in Milpitas. Stop by and say hello and see the real thing up close. Wonderful people.

Aleks-

The pricing on the flywheel depends on what year Duc you have. When they went to the 3 phase charging system the flywheels changed. For my 01 748 the flywheel was $200. IIRC the single phase flywheel is cheaper. The flywheel nuts you need are $45. Labor was $150 for the install. They need to drain the oil so that needs to be replaced. I had some other work done also but it cost ~$400 or so for the flywheel install with all the parts.

The single-phase flywheel is just over $100, and shaves off twice the weight that the three-phase flywheel does. Which is why I would notice some cold stalling, and you wouldn't. My flywheel weighs 9 ounces.

As for the install, it's not something you can't do yourself with some decent tools. Help you get to know your bike, and saves you some money.

I installed a Nichols fly wheel on my Fila and had some stalling issues but I got that ironed out. The difference is amazing with the Nichols fly wheel. I have installed one on the 916 but have not fired it up yet with it installed. I am sure that it will be as amazing as it is on the Fila but of course with a little bit less zing. This is one upgrade worth every penny.

With my 748/890 motor it was fantastic. These little motors really like a light flywheel.

Hummm... I should call them to see if they have one for a 1098 yet...

I LOVE mine on my carburated 900ss!!!
The best "bang for the buck" . (Right after a 14 tooth sprocket, of course)

If my information is correct the 1098 already comes with a light fly wheel.
