916 track bike pics, exhaust leak
I got the 916 back together that I bought off of ebay a few months ago. I put on new fairings, oil cooler, radiator, and installed the MBP retainers. The bike is a 98 916 with a full 50 mm exhaust. It definitely pulls stronger than my 97 916 with Arrow cans only.
I have a problem and was wondering if any one knew if there are special exhaust gaskets when a full exhaust system is bolted up. I put on a new gasket and I still have a slight exhaust leak coming from the exhaust flange. It looks like the head is not flat and the flange wont seal on it. Any one have experience with this?
thanks
Mike

Had the same problem...
I, and don't hate me for this...sealed the flange with a new lead gasket+high temp liquid gasket and then wrapped the pipes with tape.....not so pro. but did the deed..no leaks after at least 2+ years.>>>>996
Be good.

nice looking track bike, wish I could help you with exhaust leak, but I only have slipons, never been an issue. The 50mm is huge!

Nice bike - but for a stock engine the 50 mm system "should" result in a less desireable power output - but as long as you are happy... :-)

Hey duc955, it may not be stock, I dont really know for sure. It just seems to pull stronger than my 97 916. We shall see when I let my son run with me at a track day coming up.

Hey Bill W.,
Where did you get your gasket? Was it the stock ducati gasket? Did it look like the head was not flat on your bike where the flange mates?
thanks

Hey guys,
thanks for the lead sheet tip for the gasket. I will look around for some material today. I have some punches for the holes and tin snips for the outside.

Let us know what you think when you get to the track-test!
I got replacement header gaskets from Chris Kelly at www.ca-cycleworks.com

thanks guys for the tip. I couldnt find any lead, but I went to Napa and found some really thick, exhaust manifold, gasket material, and cut and punched out a gasket. I sandwiched the gasket between the two stock ducati metal gaskets and seated the top bolt first then the two bottom ones, since it was near the top that is was leaking before. Started the bike up, and no leak!
I took it out on the back roads here where I live and ripped it up a bit. My son is going to have a blast at track days on this thing. It pulls really strong. It still has a slight pop just off idle on deceleration, but I am not going to worry about it.
thanks again.
Mike
