Cheap Bodywork Review(Pit-teck)

I know you have all seen that cheap bodywork they sell on Ebay, well I decided to buy some. I know, there are tons of horror stories about them but I can do some fiberglass and bodywork so I figure I can handle any problems. Im gonna use this thread to document what I think about them and the install over the next week or two. It may take awhile as I am a 1 1/2 time student and work 40+ hours a week now.

Here is the exact listing I bought
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=130077262691

First impressions
Shipping times on these things are amazing. I paid for them about 3pm on a friday and they were at my door when I got home from school at 2pm on Monday. The box is huge and packed FULL of packing peanuts. No damage from shipping would ever happen to these things.

Out of the box I get my first look at them. They are heavier than other brands but the stories I hear about them being extermly brittle just isnt true for mine. It may be because the Duc has alot more flat surfaces than the average asian bike. They bend and flex fairly well for the price I paid. They do, on the other hand uses oriented strand cloth instead of the normal weave that Hotbodies, Godfather, etc use.

Primer they have on them is cheap but sprayed fairly well. There are no thin parts or runs so final prep should be pretty easy. The upper fairing was compressed a little but when pushed onto the fairing bracket it expaned with no cracking. I may also have to add a little glass on the upper arond the screen on one side as it looks like the trimmer got a little happy and cut a tad bit much out. Shouldnt be too hard for me as I have fiberglass experience.

The side panels kinda amazed me. I expected them to be extremly wavy, as most ducs with fiberglass bodywork seem to have wavy side panels, but they were amazingy smooth. On the other hand the edges werent trimed exactly straight but 20 mins and an sanding block will fix that.

The seat unit! What can I say. The seat unit is probably the worst part in the kit. It is slightly warped(should be able to fix that). But more concerning is that where it meets the airbox and tank doesnt fit that well. This seat flares out a little too much and may take a little modification around that area.

I will deffinetly need advice from you great guys on fitting the belly pan. Ive never used one so Im not exactly sure on how its mounted. Any pictures or instructions?

More to come as I began to fit and mount these. Pictures too.

Damn this is cheap! Around $300 for a full kit.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, may get some myself if you give it the thumbs up.

On the belly pan, I mounted my uppers first (they are separate like the stock stuff) and then lined up the belly pan and marked the holes to drill. I had to work with it a bit (mostly by sanding) to make sure it lined up the way I wanted. Its mostly right but could have been a bit tighter in spots, I just ran out of room.

Did you get any additional brackets for the kit to mount to? Mine came with two for the rear which without would have been a struggle to mount the pan without them.

Of course this is all on a 749 so not sure how much help it will be.

Can you tell me if the solo seat has hardware already attached (probably wishful thinking) to mount to the bike? Where did you get the hardware if not?

The body work I purchased came with it, it was the Ducati Corse stuff I bought used. I am not real crazy about the quality or finish of the fiberglass however it fit pretty good.

You may be able to purchase the brackets from a dealer, they are basically Z brackets that will accept a female DZUS that attaches with two rivets. One bracket is a little longer than the other. On the right side it mounts to the rear brake master cylinder with existing bolts and holes. On the left it mounts just under the front sprocket, again to existing holes.

They keep the rear of the belly pan out and away from the chain/swingarm.

I just bought the same fairings for my zx6r. I have to admit that they are good for the price... One thing forsure is that im not going to paint them because I do not think it is worth it. Good for starting race fairings!

how to mount bodywork?

I've got the same body work. And experienced the same thing:
- Overall, parts are reasonable for $300
- Shipping was great
- Upper was compress and had to be "stretched" to fit my bracket
But I have an additional question...

I'm mounting mine up to a 748 I plan to race next year.
The side panels I have the 4 Dzus per side (two under the upper, two from the frame tabs).
But how the heck to I secure the belly pan?
And, how do I keep the side from "twisting in the wind"?

I can connect the belly pan to the bottom of each side panel.
But that would just leave the sides and belly "hanging" from the 4 Dzus at the top of the side panels.
There needs to be something to holds (at least) the leading edge of the side panels to the bike (stock bodywork has a V-shaped piece for that).
But even with that, it seems like the weight of the belly pan should be secure to something besides the bottom of the side panels.

I can try to post pics if that will help.
Please - any advice will be great appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick
