Little oil seepage at mesh filter...

I've got a small leak at the mesh filter area. Trying to tell for sure it's not the little bolt underneath that's threads were fixed and sealant used some months ago when I screwed that up. Anyway it does look like for some reason a little oil gets past the aluminum washer for the mesh filter you replace every time with an oil change. Looks ok from what I can see and it's not out of place. I've got a little piece of paper over the washer so I can definitely determine it's that and not the bolt that was fixed.

Anyway I already double checked and the torque of the mesh filter is at 42nm so so should I tighten it slightly more? Or maybe is the inner bolt not tightend enough? This is a 2001 model so the bolt is female is there is one inside the other.

Hate to ask, but did you actually replace the washer? Be sure to check the case and screw head to make sure there are no nicks.

You mean the big mesh filter washer? I believe that was replaced at the time of the repair as an oil change was being done. And it is the correct washer and size from the Ducati dealer from what I can see. As for the little bolt that I now know never to remove that washer was replaced as well at the time of the repair of that.

This is the same oil seepage I believe that led me into thinking the little bolt and the mesh filter were leaking. Then I messed up the bolt threads and went down that repair path.

So now I think I'm back full circle and the mesh filter is slightly leaking.

I guess the only way to know for sure that it is the mesh filter and not the little bolt (please no it's thread repair, proper torque and sealant) is what I'm doing now and have a little piece of paper covering where mesh washer so that if it does leak from there it'll show up paper and I'll know.

I guess if it does end up being that the proper solution is to put the bike on it's sidestand, take off the mesh filter and put on a new aluminum washer.

You mean take the mesh filter out and make sure where it seats to the washer and where on the case the washer seats look ok?

Yup! thats what I mean... If its got nicks in it no matter how many washers you change, It'll leak. I change my washers every winter oil change and have been lucky to never have a leak.

OK I'll check. I never did anything that would cause a nick. What do I do if there is a nick?

From what I see so far it's coming from the big mesh filter washer. Haven't taken it off yet because I want to be sure.

So is it possible the washer is bad in some way and when it was originally put on some time ago? I know the washer would have gotten moved around to at least a slightly different position when it was removed to fix the little bolt thread. So I doubt one area of it is messed up.

So if I remove it and don't see any nick does it have to be a defective washer or something?

It is definitly possible... You never know what you are getting sometimes when you but sealing washers. best to check, replace and re-torque.

I'll give it a little longer to see if it's definitely leaking there. If so then I'll take off, replace and retorque.

Man now this and the rocker problems with my 916. I cannot see how people can deal with multiple bikes.

Well definitely slight leakage from there. Took it off while the bike is on sidestand. 2 quarts of oil comes pouring out. I checked all surfaces and they all feel ok. However on the case it feels, slightly higher in the middle compared to the sides. You can even see sorta impressions where the sides have circular areas and it was made this way it looks. Maybe nothing to do with problem or maybe me trying to find something. Anyway no nicks or anything. I put a new aluminum washer and will let it sit for a week or two.

If it still leaks after this what's the next step? Leave it and tell the next owner and maybe a Ducati dealership can figure it out?
