eBay questions

This is for people who have sold a bike on eBay. So if I were to do so what's the deal. I have never sold anything on eBay before so selling a whole bike is a bit new. I can't be assured of a local sale so I might have to get into shipping. What percentage does eBay get and how/when do they get it? What happens if it's a deadbeat buyer do I get money back from eBay? Do you lose an additional percentage if Paypal is how you receive the money? For instance does eBay take like 3% for the sale and then if the buyer pays you with Paypal you lose another 3%?

I was thinking just doing eBay and see what happens. Worst case no one buys.

Well i sold my car on ebay and I can't tell you exactly what the fees are but when i sold my car for 1k it cost me about 80 dollars to list it and sell it. I think there is a flat rate that ebay charges.

In my case the buyer was local and just came and paid cash and drove the car off. Not sure about paypal fees, I believe that anything over 500 or something you pay 3% or something.

I sold my YSR50 to a guy on ebay. He drove over from PA [about 3 hours] and picked it up. Paid me cash. Ebay deducted their fee [in my case it's linked to my paypal]

If they don't pay, you re-list it and report them [you only pay the listing fee]
re-listing is free [I can't say how many times you can re-list without penalty]

Yes, both ebay and paypal [if you accept payment through them] get their cut. [I can't remember the %, but I'm sure you are close with the 3%]

Granted mine was easy, the buyer and I could meet face-to-face to finish the deal.

Hello grendels_arm, I've sold 4 motorcycles on eBay and have purchased one on eBay as well and will try to help answer your questions.

Quote:
"I can't be assured of a local sale so I might have to get into shipping."
The seller usually states that this is a buyer's responsibility, both for arrangements and cost.

You'll probably eat the cost. eBay has a terrible reputation for resolving conflicts. The average cost for the ads I placed was ~$40.

I'm not sure...never used PayPal and probably never will. I don't like to give my money away for convenience sake. I always require a Bank Check, US Postal Office Money Order or cash. I also state that Bank Checks must clear PRIOR to releasing the bike. NO EXCEPTIONS.

I've had nothing but good fortune using eBay (all my bikes sold on the first posting) and still keep in contact with 3 of the 4 buyers.

I have bought and sold bikes on ebay.

Make sure you state that buyer is responsible for shipping. They can use a shipping company who will come to your door and pick it up. You just have to be there, they take the bike and you are done, no cost to you, buyer arranges and pays for.

Yes pay pal takes their 3 % in addition to ebay fees. What most buyers do is take Pay Pal for the deposit only, lets say $500 . THis way you get paid the deposit instantly and if they then renig on the deal you keep the deposit.
Ask for the rest by Certified check.

If they back out on the deal you can relist for free, check the rules

I suggest you look at some ebay motorcycle listings, and then you can pick up some tips by look ing at the other listings as to what to say.

I am told, and I tend to believe, that most vehicles (and indeed most high value items) put up for sale on eBay are done so just for the advertising. They end up being sold off-line. I see lots of auctions with ridiculous (i.e. high) reserve prices or starting bids; both of which cost you money I think if you include them in your auction. Of course, this advertising isnt' free, but you get a huge audience. I assume lots of people will e-mail you looking for a deal or to offer you a Buy It Now. People do this to get around eBay's final value fee. Of course, it's not allowed by their agreement and you'd be suspended if they found out. I've tried to purchase a few items that had auctions like this and in all cases was told by the seller that the item was no longer for sale (implying an off-line sale).

THere are 2 sides to pay pal, yours and theirs.

If you pay or they pay for a paypal account, you can do things like use credit cards. For example, if you pay for paypal, then anyone can pay you with their credit card. It makes you like a store. BUT, then paypal takes a chunk. I think it is 3%.

You can also get a free paypal account. (this is what I have), and you can only use it for up to $500 a month. Paypal gets NO cut of this. It really is free to get and free to use. But if your bike is over that, forget it.

The free paypal is great for buying /selling less than $500 stuff. However, you have to be careful to warn people who also have paypal, that yours is the free kind. Else they can try and send you a payment on their charge card, you'll get a notice from paypal saying you have a payment "pending", but you must upgrade to the paid pay pal account type in order to accept the payment.

lastly, you can set up YOUR free paypal account to use YOUR credit card as a source of funds. So when you buy something, paypal will send the "cash" and just charge your credit card. The seller doesn't see this, to them it just looks like you send cash. (again, this is all free, not cuts involved)

Confused yet???

Kurt

grendels_arm,

Its 3% for Paypal (if you can't wait for a money order or certified check from the winner) plus once you get the money in your Paypal account (it's a bank) you have to transfer it to your bank which is another 5 business days.

Best thing to do if you sell it on eBay is pay the $79 dollars for advertising it (be realistic with your price because if it doesn't sell your out $79) and ask the winner to pay via certified check. I sold several motorcycles and my Maserati on eBay and I stated in my auction the terms (I reserve the right to verify the check with the issuing bank before release of the bike, etc...). Good luck and call me with the details on how it works out for you.
