XX9 Rear Shock Spring
Doing some homework for upcoming suspension project. I've heard a few times that the rear shock on the XX9 Showa bikes is a little soft. I've also heard that the bi comes with a stiffer spring. Has anyone in the 180lb territory swapped their rear spring for a stiffer one or for a bi spring??
I am 180 with gear, and the bike works good for me, but think it's mostly since I don't know any better. Spending the money for a suspension servicing anyways so I might as well make it right. I know springs aren't expensive at $100 + - , but if the bi spring would do the trick, I would think you could pick one of those up for a pretty good deal, no???

No BS just real good stuff. They are the best IMHO ! But I have been told that the suspension is setup from the factory for somebody our size. Max will know, and most likely will revalve to make it the best it can be.

galaxy ,my biposto was too stiff, and i was impressed with swaping to the showa with a mono spring.as im 190 with gear, doubt the bi spring will be what you want.

The spring on my bi 999 was according to my suspesion guy WAY to soft for me and the riding I do, which is primarily track riding. With the rear being way to soft when I braked heavily going into corners the rear would rise then as it would settle it would turn into a pogo stick and become a handful.
I did not have a spring swapped out as I was just not to impressed with the showa unit and got an Elka unit sprung and valved appropriately for my riding and weight.
Having that done made a HUGE difference.

Hi Galaxy.
According to a doc I grabbed from the old Section8 website, the shock rate for the mono is 7.15, and 7.65 for the Biposto. But.. according to the same doc, for a 180lb guy, you should be using a rate of 9.
Does this help?
Furthermore, it says the Showa shocks shouldn't need to be revalved if the change isn't more than a 3nm change.

Just spent an hour and a half on the phone with Jason from Section 8 fame. WOW!! That guy knows XX9 suspension stuff...or talks a good game one. From what I know I'll go with the former!! Anyways rusty, you're correct. After talking to him it all makes sense and know I wonder what on gods green earth was Ducati thinking when they set this bike up. It has a 1.0 spring in the forks...waaay to stiff for anyone under 200 and like you said a 7.15 on the rear. As Jason put it...criminally too soft. He recommended .925 springs in the forks and a 9.5 spring on the shock. He 100%guaranteed these springs for my weight (180) and riding. Said this thing would ride like an easy chair even with the stiffer spring. Doesn't add up at first but when he broke it down, it made complete sense. I'm not even gonna try to explain it unless someone wants to know. Get in touch with him about this.

Not hardly...if you look in the thread above, rusty was correct (and confirmed by Jason today) that the bi spring is only 7.65. Makes no sense at all.
