good news bad news..
Ok, bike is a 2000 748R. Runs sweet, love it. But I have a bad stator. I bought a replacement for it last month and have finally gotten around to changing it. I drained the oil and coolant, etc. Good news: no flakes in the oil, just some dirt. Looks great. Bad news, both hex heads on the alternator cover are almost round. #5 hex head will not break them loose. Anyone have any advice? I don't mind buying a new cover/bolts but I can't figure out how to get them out..Since they sit flush in the alternator cover, i can't use a bolt extractor. Thanks guys!

plus 1 on the hand impact driver. Also make sure that the tip of the 3/8 drive allen is in good condition, grind the tip back if it is at all rounded. I insert the driver tip into the flat head cap screw first (without the inpact driver) and give it a few good whacks with a hammer. this will sometimes break it loose a bit. Then try it with the impact driver. If the allen tip fits loose in the screw a trick that NCRick showed me is to put some coarse valve grinding compound in the screw "pocket" and then try. the coarse compound tends to make the allen wrench "grab" the screw a bit better. if all of this fails I have removed them by using the corner of a small chisel and spinning them out by digging the corner of the chisel in the screw towards the outer edge and tapping with a hammer (in a counterclockwise direction of course) You can always buy new screws.

This is what I got because I stripped a Hex bolt. Works like a charm I never used the other tool that was posted.

Ok fellas, got the impact driver and it's not working. I'm thinking the combination of being too tight and too rounded is not helping. I have a new inspection cover, should I dremel away at the edge where the bolts go in to get it off?

Just get a drill and a bit and drill the head of the allen bolt off. Just use a drill bit the same size as the shaft of the bolt. It will take the head off and you can just use a pair of vice grips to remove the remainder of the bolt after the cover is off. As a bonus, if you can find a set of reverse twist drill bits (sometimes referred to as left handed drill bits) you can set your drill in reverse and drill away. Once you reach the point where you're almost through most drills will catch. When this happens with reverse twist drill bits, you'll run the bolt right on out of the bolt hole..........sean

Hey Guys! Thanks to LY Snyder for his advice. Used a dremel, cut some slots in the inspection cover then a flat head screw driver took them right out. Changed the stator tonight. Have to say, while putting it all back together, the Permatex Gray Moto Sealant is sloppy stuff. How you do this neatly is beyond me. I am seriously worried about the case leaking but I'll guess I will find out. I coated it pretty good, so hopefully it will be alright. Just wondering why they don't recommend anything thicker like Orange Permatex? I'll be out of town til Sunday, so I'll fill the crankcase then and see what happens. Thanks to everyone for their help. This is my first Ducati and first time working on one, so I hope it goes well!
