916 to 848 whats changed on the engine
i own a 996 the bike is almost the same as the 916/748/998
remove the bolt on bits so you are left with the engine
how different are all the engines? start with the cases they didnt ever change very much! the clutch and alternator covers remain the same shape! so the engine cases havent changed much!!
you can remove the gears from an 848 gearbox and put them on the 996 output input shafts and have an 848 gearbox in a 996/916/748 engine
so this beggs the question what else can be swapped about?

tranny gears as you said, shift drum, crank and rods can be swapped, timing shaft maybe. but thats about it. starter gears and timing gears are all different. stator cover is different. stator is different. 848 flywheel is different but might interchange. i have one but haven't checked yet to see if it'll swap over.

996 has different cases to the 748/916 as they had to change the stud spacing to accommodate the larger bore.

Yeah, but wouldnt it be about the same displacement as the 996 but with modern valve train and the like? Might actually make a decent middleweight bike. Some weight trimming here and there and bam, your in. The 848 I rode made great power without being overwhelming, just could've used a little more grunt down low.

Ah, sorry. I had read your other thread and thought you may be thinking the same as I was. I've an older 996 with a bunch of miles. Instead of a rebuild I was thinking of a swap. We have seen the 1098 swap. Wondered myself about what I mentioned. I will step aside for more knowledgeable responses from the gang.
