ducati 748 chain and sprockets
I just hit 12k on my 01 ducati 748 and its time to see the shop. I'm also in need of a new chain and since I'm at it wanted to change the sprockets also. My question is what have you guys found to be a great set up in sprockets or should I just keep stock tooth. All comments are welcome!!

How big of a difference is a 14/40 from a 14/41. Plan on doing some track days so wanted something for the road and track.

What effect does that have on the shaft bearing over time? Wouldn't it be better to keep the stock rear and jump a tooth on the front sprock? I'm a newb, so I'm just curious.

Only way he can go on the front sprocket is up to 15t and that raises the gearing.
I run 14/42 and she is a ball tearer, fast as all hell up to 125mph. but 14/41 would be a better setup overall like moto said.
I need the lower gearing to drive up a 1 in 3 ramp at home once I'm finished playing and don't need autobahn top speeds anyway.

One of the first modifications I did to my 748 was to change the ratio from the stock 14/38 to 14/40 (as recommended by Shazaam's table that Chuckracer linked to).
As Shazaam states:
Quote:
|
"Ducati decides what front and rear sprocket sizes to install on each model depending upon a number of objectives and constraints. The standard gear ratio is a compromise that considers fuel economy, performance, and the need to meet environmental laws that limit exhaust gas emissions."
|
I decided on the 14/40 ratio after discussing it with Steve at ECS ( European Cycle Services) and based on my riding style and objectives (street only).
ECS installed a 520 D.I.D. gold chain with a Supersprox Stealth 40-tooth rear (since I don't use the 748 for the track) and a 14 tooth front.
I think it is the most significant change I made to my 748. Adding two teeth to the rear made a huge difference. I feel it is what should be on the 748 if noise emissions and such weren't an issue.

I'm running 14/40 on my 748R. It works much better in town than the stock gearing but did not limit the top end too much.

I run a quick change on the rear and 40-42 depending on my mood (and the track). The quick change is a little more expensive but cheaper sprockets as Moto said. 14T on the front. I used to run 14/40 when it was a street bike.
