749R vs. 999R Question & decisions?
Comparing a 749R vs. 999R (of the same years) any help would be welcomed. Both are within my grasp, just can't decide which one? Both bikes are stock & eguals, mileage, records & appearance, but as we know some major difference in HP.
1. If handling was the main criteria which bike would be better on the street (or occasional track days) the 749R or the 999R. ?
2. Also since I'm a bit of a collector & I truly enjoy riding whatever I own which bike do you think is more of a collectable/appreciate ?
The prices when new were new may be the answer (about 22K for a 749R & 30K approx for the 999R) but I'm never afraid to ask questions, even if some may considered my thoughts stupid.
Help! Thoughts & opinions appreciated. Thanks!!

999R....but that's only because I own one. You can't go wrong with displacement.

I think you'd be happier off with the 999. I have the 749, and while it has plenty of get up and go, I kinda wish that I had gone for the extra 200cc's. Handling on the 749 is superb though, I can't say enough good things about it!

I am not an "R" expert but I do know for some years the 749R had some goodies not even found on the 999R. Might be the 06 version.

749R is the better track bike.
999R is the better street bike.
Don't look at the price. The 749R was made for racing. It is a truly amazing bike. You'd have to take both bikes apart to find all the upgrades that are unique to the 749R.
Read this link below (original site is gone). Search the forum too.

I have a 999R with one of the best upgrade parts of the 749R: the adjustable triples. I also have the 749R shock rocker but I need to add this to my bike.
So, I would go for the 999R and buy the 749R triples!

AS far as I can remember the 749R engine was the same from conception to end. The only difference was that the 2004 model had the carbon fairing. After that it was the plastic variant . The 999R got a stronger engine in 2005 and the obvious swing arm/fairing changes in 2004 . The 999R had a carbon fairing right through its production.
The difference in performance for the 749R , on paper , was when Ducati changed the way they measured the BHP from rear wheel to crank.
The 999R got upgrades through out its production.
Both bikes are very good but you would have to be a demon on the 749 to beat its bigger brother on the track. Nothing beats ccs
Have a read on here it will show all the changes though out the production years of all Ducatis. http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/bikes/Ducati.htm

I'd get the 999R.
The link and triples are nice on the 749R, however you could upgrade those quite easily.

For most of my life I settled for things that were almost as good as the thing I really wanted. Mind you, we're talking about things. When I retired,I decided to buy a motorcycle that really got my attention and promised to keep it. 2005 Ducati 999R and never looked back. I still peek at it out in the garage just to see it's still there. I ride it only once a week now to keep the miles down a bit.36000. Get the 999R and smile.

Bastard dealers. Back in 2006/7 when the 1098 came out there were HUGE discounts on remaining 2005/2006 749/999's. New 999R's were down to between $22K and $25K. A mechanic, in the old scottsdale dealership, told me to stay away from the R models. He said he never saw one with over 10K miles on it and they were not made to last on the street. I settled for a 749D. Frack.
