New 998 owner - Questions!
Hi all,
I purchased my first Ducati last September (2011) and it was a 998 with about 2,000 miles. Did a few maintenance items myself (oil change, brake fluid flush, and clutch fluid flush..) as well as fixing a problem (leaking quick disconnect, changing from the plastic connector to metal ones) with the help of this forum (just from searching old threads). Also had the dealer replaced the fuel filter and timing belts (since it is a '02, it has been awhile.. !). I have put maybe about 500 miles on it so far and it has been great to get back on 2-wheels.
A quick question for you experts: The bike came w/ a set of Termi cans. I am guessing it is a half system (? Not sure.. how do I tell?). Does that mean it also has the DP ECU already? (I think the 1/2 system comes w/ that, right?) Again, where do I look to tell?
Would it makes sense to install a Power Commander and have it tuned on dyno? I am not a racer or anything, but if it would make it "better", I don't mind spending a little bit money. Or it would not be needed if one has the DP ECU already?
Thanks in advance!

Remove the right fairing and look at the ecu, it should have a part number. Run the part number through a search engine or maybe this sight and it will tell you which ecu you have. That is how I figured mine out .

ECU is behind the right side fairing.

How does the bike run? Strong and more importantly--smoothly at all RPM and loads? If so, then no real need to spend the money. That said, timing the cams and doing a custom individual cylinder map will net some results. Even more if you set the squish and give it a little bump in compression.

Power Commanders are nice for the tweakability. How does it generally run? If it's ok below 3000, I'd likely leave it alone. Bear in mind that the PC for the 998 really does nothing under ~3500 rpm. If you do it, it'll run a bit stronger and likely pickup 3-4 hp.

Thank you for your quick response.
I think the bike runs well, although I really have no reference to compare to. My last bike was a '98 GSX-R600 and it was stolen in '04. So it has been a long time since I was on 2-wheel. And the Gixxer was not EFi.
I think it is relatively smooth other than maybe the transition from off to on throttle.
