Plastic 748/916/996 airboxes

Okay, I have gone through two plastic airboxes. They seem to crack at the mounts from flexing over time. (Okay, maybe one lowside helped finish off the last one). Time for a carbon box.

If anyone has a line on a good used one let me know. Integrity is more important than cosmetics, it will be painted.

I can only give you my experience with my 95 916. I bought it used with a carbon air box already on it. I found it had cracked and been repaired when I went through the bike the first time. I have since repaired it again. The air boxes on these bikes crack and leak, as long as it is structurally sound I'm not going to worry about it.

While I don't like them, I have the filters on the velocity stacks to keep the crap out of the motor.

When this one fails I'm just gonna look for the cheapest one in one piece.

Good luck

How does it run with those filters? Did you need a new chip?

It runs like a rabid wolverine but it had been re-chipped before I got it for the high compression pistons and full exhaust system.

Anything right on the velocity stacks has to screw up air flow. I'm willing to give up a couple of HP to keep junk out of the motor. The original design with the fuel tank being the top of the air box and the filters in the runners only works if everything is perfect. No bike this old is going to be perfect if it is being used.

You shouldn't have to re-chip a stock motor, but expect a change.

a carbon airbox will resist for years before it cracks, and it will crack if u fall etc, in one word if u stress it more then just riding on the road and trips.

srsly, my plastic airboxes had no issue whatsoever, i doubt carbons are worst then plastic.

Not sure where you got your info but filters on the stack, not the cheap ones on eBay, do not hurt you. Tomtom has tested this with positive results.

I would agree that the stock airbox generally holds up well. I have have only seen them crack around the mount bolts a few times out of a large number of bikes. I also agree that that the over the velocity stack airfilters do not loose performance. They may disrupt the "ideal" air flow and the overall volume of the airbox, but I have not seen or heard of any power loss from them.

About to get the airfilter in the airbox and have the chip for the exhaust. Do I need a different chip? Would this make it run lean?

No, you do not. If it runs any leaner it won't be enough to matter because your chip is running the system richer than stock. However, with aftermarket pipes and eprom I suggest having your CO level set by the dealer. Usually when they do that they throw in balancing the throttle bodies and adjusting voltage to throttle position sensor. Around $120.

Short answer, no and not really.
