When my 1098 needed a new battery I installed a Ballistic battery. When I bought mine they didn't have the model chart up on their web site yet. They simply listed the recommended battery by engine displacement. I called them with some questions about the cells and as soon as I mentioned Ducati, they immediately recommended their 12 cell version. Their battery by displacement chart recommended the 8 cell. I bought the 12 cell and it works well. The battery is physically much smaller than the OEM battery so I don't think you'll have an issue with fit. Cold day start performance is exactly as per their video on the web site. You could give them a call to discuss your 749- I found them to be very friendly, fast service and they ride.
