Hey everybody, picked up a 99 748 a few months ago. Really clean bike but it died on me a few weeks ago. Anyways hopefully I'll learn alot from this site, the bike is just sitting now until I figure out what's wrong.
I was riding it to work one day then all of a sudden my rpms shot all the way up so I pulled in the clutch and shut off the bike. So now the bike won't start, I thought maybe the timing belt snapped but they seem fine. The starter seems like it's working fine. I did however lift the gas tank and it seems like theres a small leak but I'm not sure how that would affect the bike. The engine just doesn't turn over, All you hear is 1 click when you press the starter.

The rpms going all the way sounds clutch related. I'm confused, you say the starter is working fine but it only makes 1 click when you press it...

Yes, it only clicks once. The engine doesn't turn over at all. If it was clutch related would the engine still fire up and start? How do I tell if the engine is seized?

do you know how long since the belts were changed and the bike serviced? the fuel leak doesn't sound good, they run a bit of pressure for the fuel injection. what voltage is your battery putting out? pretty unlikely that it's seized the revs usually drop just before a siezure. but you can try lifting the rear with a stand and put it in top gear and see if you can move the engine back or forth and listen for any metalic noices.

It may not be too serious but I think you're going to have to take it to a Ducati shop. I doubt you'll be able to follow the diagnostic suggestions people come up with here.

The leak maybe unrelated and that could be either gaspump seal, fuel fittings or if you may have a crack in the black plastic large nut that holds the fuel pump wiring into the bottom of the gaspump housing. All fixable. You also may have a low battery if its clicking once, they don't last long. I'm lucky to get 2yrs or so out of mine.

Seriously though, degaw...check out this article:
'03 M620 won't start: starter clicks, engine doesn't turn - Ducati Monster Forums: Ducati Monster Motorcycle Forum
Different model, but similar issue with the one click thing. For this guy, it turned out to be the starter motor. Theres some good info on page two regarding how to test that using a multimeter.
