Differences between a 748R and a 996R

With the exception of the motor, what's the differences between a 748R and a 996R? Is the frame identical?

I ask this because I have the chance to buy a real clean 748R for a real good price which I would like to turn into a real track bike. I also have a 996R motor waiting in my garage for a project like this. But I'm not sure if the motor will fit.

Any suggestions and advices?

Keep the 748R as is and find a 998 frame or donor bike for the motor.

I'm not super familiar with the 748R, however as I remember this bike was still fitted with a Desmoquattro engine whereas the 996R uses a Testrastretta power plant.

If this is the case, the motors can be swapped but it is not a trivial exercise (and the frames are different).

Frankly the easiest way to obtain 996R power is to find a 998S in Euro spec and if it is one of the FE editions (from 2004) then it will have the Ohlins suspension too.

Frame is identical and known as kayalari deep vee.
748R came in a few different options and the latest 2001 should be damn near identical to 996R but the engine.
You realise this frame is the perfect candidate for accepting a 1x98 right

If I am not mistaken Tom '02 was the last year for the 748R, and it was also the last of the Duc Superbikes equipped with the DesmoQuattro. So are you saying that the TestaStretta's will fit in this frame? Does that include the 848?

It will indeed. We fitted a 999s engine to a -99 748R chassie. No issues whatsoever, not even throttlebodies and such. You´ll need to find a 996R or 998 airbox. Tom knows more on mapping/ecu then me, but we ran the 999s engine on the 748R´s existing ecu.
Some splicing/dicing/soldering connectors, but easy work.

Just make sure that you get a late one with öhlins front and rear as the earlier ones are lower spec.

I have no intentions at the moment of doing anything like this as a browse thru Ian Faloon's data shows that there are only 15 '02 748R's in the US, and as mine is a Euro import, it may be the only one like it in the 'States. And while I realize that the more I modify and personalize it, the more unique it becomes, to me it's value is entirely in keeping it as true as possible to it's original design, and in enjoying it for what it is... a beautiful, pristine example of the last of the DesmoQuattro based Tamburini 916's.

It is however good to know that I can drop a Testastretta plant in there, but make no mistake, the engine in the R gives nothing away to any of the 916 derivatives save the 998R. Anyone who has ever ridden one can attest to that...
