D16RR Display immobilizer question
I bought a D16 from a salvage auction, and as it turns out the auction itself has lost the display. I've heard rumor that the D16 immobilizer process is just in the ECU and key, and does not go with the display. Anyone ever ran one without gauges, or with aftermarket display WITHOUT flashing the ECU?
My choices are:
1. Buy a new oem display, and flash the ECU (hopefully) to accept it ($2000)
2. Buy a Microtech ECU and run an aftermarket or oem display ($?)
3. Buy a matching set ECU, Key, and Display ($3500)

Good luck with that process, I ran into a dead end with that situation on my hyper... Was able to transplant internals of my dash to a new case.,.. Otherwise I was screwed.
Not to Off topic, but tell us details about the auction and the bike... Good price? Condition? Repairs needed?

disable immobilizer in OEM ECU or run Microtec ECU. Should be able to find a 848/1098/1198 dash unit for much less than a desmo unit

since you brought that up...i recently found a salvage Desmosedici for $15,000. Most damage was in the rear tail, seat, and exhaust along with the typical scratched fairings and levers.

I think the 1098 Dash should work on a D16RR - they appear to be physically identical, however note they are not actually identical - the D16RR dash reads to 4,000rpm in the first major increment, the 1098 dash reads to 1,000rpm in the first increment. Thus the top reading on a 1098 is 13,000rpm whereas on the D16RR the maximum reading is 16,000rpm.
If you want to fix the bike properly just grit your teeth and try to source a D16RR instrument panel.

I've done the research now, and man its an ordeal.
The D16rr has an immobilizer, but not the same as other Ducs. The firmware programmed in the dash houses the immobilizer software. It searches out on powerup for the RF identifier of its married key. As I am missing this display, we have a problem. According to Ferracci, (thanks Eraldo) I can buy a new oem virgin dash for $1250 and it will marry as soon as powered up, possibly with a factory program, or maybe on its own, with the key I have in the ignition at that time.
My other option is to buy a different oem dash, used, and install a Mircrotec ECU from Ducshop, where they have designed one to talk to the dash, and ignore the immobilizer. This will also get me better control of the bike, with software that can tweak maps held in the ECU, and tweak traction control slip maps too.
If only the auction hadn't lost the damn display, this wouldn't be an issue.

I was told the connector is different, and also the software is completely different. It would not display correctly, not in RPM or traction settings.
