Cam pulley nuts
Does anyone know if nylon lock nuts will work in place of the "special" castle nuts? Feel free to voice your opinions.

I don't think you'll find any nylock nuts in the diameter and pitch.
Threads used are 15x1.0 and 17x1.0, very oddball.
The pulley nuts are essentially bearing locknuts, you can find them through industrial bearing supply places. 15mm is called a km2 and 17mm is called a km3 I think, and use special lock washers.

Thats a good question.
I have been thinking of squishing the used ones a little bit and putting the locktight to them.
$10 bucks a piece the little buggers.

Nylon or "nyloc" nuts are not designed for the temperatures encountered on a running engine. There may be some specialty material ones out there but I've never seen them. Now they may work just fine but I wouldn't recommend taking the chance. Anyway get a set of nuts for your tensioners for $7 a set from desmotimes.com .

Got a little confused rereading the post, the small ones on the pulley wheels ate not to bad. Desmotimes 7.00 U.S. a set. Just purchased 4 sets for my stock. Now the larger lock nuts on the cams them selves are up there. About 21.00 U.S. each. Just received the tools to take them off when I do the cams if necessary. I have used those type of nuts before. It was the bolt that could not be used again since lock nut tends to bight in. Not sure with these. Not to hijack the thread but are these indeed reusable or is it or the cam and nut a one time separation? I could of swore it was just the three small allen heads that had to be loosened to change the cam timing, but not certain.

Thanks for all the replies...To clarify, I'm talking about the nuts that hold the toothed belt pulleys to the camshafts.

In an aircraft application they are referred as as an all metal stop nut. You do not want a nylock in a heat sensitive environment. With some research you may be able to find a metric counter part. If you do let me know because 21 bucks + each does not thrill me. Good luck
