ugh... frozen and now stripped rearset mounting bolt on 1198sp
so i was installing my new rearsets...
and one of the four bolts connecting stock rearset to frame was pretty well frozen. being as careful as i can i tried to use elbow grease to loosen. bad mistake. stripped the inside of the hex bolt. now i have a frozen and stripped rearset mounting bolt.
a google search suggests penetrant and flame (really?!?). common sense suggests drilling out and retapping.
i would appreciate wisdom here!

go to Ace Hardware
Ace Hardware stocks these:
PB Blaster Penetrating Catalyst, SKU# 19592
Ace Broken Screw Remover, SKU# 2192292
Both work miracles. Best wishes.

The frame threads are stripped or the hex head is rounded out?
Assuming you mean the latter, then I've never failed to remove a broken bolt with an easy-out:
EASYOUTS, EASY-OUTS, EZ OUT, EZY-OUT, Bolt Extractor, Screw Extractor

Sounds like you stripped out the hex on the allen screw. If you can find a torx bit a little larger than the hex, you can drive it in and use it to turn the screw out. If that doesn't work, use a drill bit about the diameter of the threaded portion of the screw and carefully drill until the head falls off. You can then remove the rearset and turn the rest of the screw out with a pair of vise grips.
Next time, use a quality plain allen wrench to break them loose, not a ball end.

Fail. Just buy the right tool for the job. They don't cost much.

thanks for inputs!
not quite sure what i'll try yet, but there are a number of good suggestions here and from the ducati@list.ducati.net.
i'll sleep on it and dig in tomorrow.
oh, i did use a good quality hex rod allen key. i bought the bike used and the hex looked a little funky to start with. in hind sight, i should have gone with penetrating fluid/heat before attempting to un freeze.
stay tuned for the next chapter.

Listen to ttpete. Tap a torx socket into the stripped bolt and use an impact driver on it.
Not an air impact, but a cam action driver used with a hammer.

The torx option is fine to try first. If it doesnt work, no harm done. On the other hand, drill the head off and you may be past the point of no return.

Eh, you could always heli-coil it if the threads got messed-up drilling the bolt out.
If it has a bunch of thread locker on the bolt, as Ducati very very fond of lathering on, heat can kill it. Maybe drive the torx head bit on to the bolt as mentioned previously and then heat the crap out of the bit to kill the thread locker.
