RPM Wire
Hi Guys ...
Trying to find the RPM wire on my 999 but can`t see it on the wiring diasgram I have here , does anyone know what color it is and where I can find it ?
I need it to wire in a gear indicator , had it working great when first installed it but can`t remember now what wire I used for the RPM , doh !!
Cheers

I just checked my wiring diagram and it seems it not that easy. I'm going to guess and say it must be one of the communication lines. I know my 748 has a wire the drives the tach but it looks like the 749/999 must use a serial data line for the tach and other info. just my educated guess though.

Section P9 (Electrical System) page 69 of the service manual does mention this and may at least help you with tracking it down.
Quote:
For example, after
disconnecting the electrical wiring to
the rpm/ignition - injection system
timing sensor (in front of the
camshaft drive gear)
|
It's kind of odd that the wiring diagram doesn't show color codes fro Item 18 RPM/Ignition sensor.

Are you trying to grab the wire going into the ecu from the sensor or from the ecu to the gauge cluster?

Hello Tim ...
I just need an RPM pulse wire for the gear indicator mate , it has to have an RPM signal and a signal from the speed sensor ..
Cheers

There is no RPM wire in the classical sense on the xx9 series bikes.
The ECU sends the RPM signal via the CAN bus to the dash. This is a coded signal that also includes the water temp, speed and many other and is no good for you.
If you have to, you can get the signal from the sensor direct were the ECU is getting it's from. On the wire diagram it's the sensor called MOT (nr. 26) There are three wires, one ground and one each sensor signal + and sensor signal -. ECU pin 34, 25 and 35.
On the engine it's coming out between the left hand engine cover and the battery box, height wise between the water pump and the alternator. The connector from the sensor to the wire harness should be behind the battery box.
You said you had it working before and I assume you had no problems, so there shouldn't be reason not to do it again. However, if it wouldn't have been working before I would have recommended not the take the signal from that sensor.
Ducati's are special in the sense that they don't have separate Ref and Sinc Sensors as most other vehicles, but this one sensor only that not only gives the RPM, but also the cam shaft position. So your injection amount and time as well as your ignition timing all depend on this one sensor and the ECU relies on a clean signal with a clear rising and falling edge when the missing tooth on the gear passes by.
The signal that gets send out from this sensor is very week to begin with becoming an issue specifically during cranking.
Many words for saying I wouldn't mess with that sensor and risking to increase the resistance or change the signal form, but than again if it did work for you before, ...

Hi Porschespinner...
What you say makes a load of sense and also clears up a mystery , I`ll explain .
I fitted the gear indicator Pzracing GT400 and a quickshifter and did a track day at Snetterton circuit , the bike was faultless , I then fitted a Power Commander and took it to MSS colchester kawasaki to have it mapped.
It was all going well until fuel in a fine spray was coming out of the exhaust ,the rear cylinder.
The dyno was stopped and the PC sent away to have it checked ,all was ok , I brought he bike home and tried to start it a few days later and it would not start and it seemed the rear cylinder was fueling too much and locked.
I took the bike back to them and they disconnected quickshifter/gear indicator and GPS timmer , and the bike run well again ,they said they found some crushed wires ? , taped them up and gave me a hefty bill...
So , as you say the wires on these Ducatis serve more than one command and just maybe one of the crushed wires affected the injector on the rear cylinder and caused the over fueling....
Its a problem as I only want an rpm pulse , maybe I`ll try again and try to make a connection away from any possibility of the wire getting crushed .
Cheers
Rob
