1198 SP - Gearing change and traction control + Quickshift
Hi All,
Looking to gear down my SP from stock. Any recommendations on ratios? 520 vs 525?
Also - does changing the gearing influence or mess with the traction control/ quick-shifter? Not sure if they operate just on tire slip and engine speed but I'd imagine the gearing does play a role.
Bike is stock now but will do a full Termi system at the first service.
Thanks!

A gear change will not influence the DQS or DTC. I would recommend you stay with the 520 chain. You will not see any gains from the switch, except your chain and sprocket bills going up due to premature wear and breakage.

@ 750 - The stock chain is 525. I was thinking of switching to a 520 set-up to save weight but I agree - esp with this motor might be better to stay 525 for the strength.
This bike (as it seems with all Ducs) is geared high (IMHO). I think gearing it down slightly would help with lower speed/ tight corners. Also, I gather from a few posts here that a lot of people never really see 6th gear. I wouldn't mind having more acceleration/response in the first few gears - which would sacrifice top end, but honestly, how often am I going to see the top of 6th gear - aka 180mph?
Re: the impact of gearing on DQS an TC: I called my dealer this morning and spoke with a tech who just happened to be on the other line with DNA. Final word from DNA - "Don't touch the gearing - it will impact both DQS and TC." Not happy with this answer - still researching.

I remembering this issue coming up before. Someone did it and they were saying that due to higher revs from gearing down, the DQS got confused with respect of what gear it was on. So it would cut the engine as if going to 7th.

Get the Termignoni slip-ons w/ DP ECU....
A PCV or Bazzazz unit to smooth out the fueling....
R1 throttle tube...
And you will realize REALLY QUICK that you do NOT need to re-gear the bike. It has plenty enough power and torque to pull any gear.
My 1198S is the first bike I've ever owned or ridden that gearing was not needed at all. With 94 lb-ft to the wheels, any shorter gearing will just make the wheelies worse.

@ Mospeada - I think that sums up what I've been finding. I'll do the full system with ECU and dial in the fueling first and worry about gearing at the very end (if it even is still an issue).
R1 throttle tube... whats the deal? Smoother or just a steeper degree for opening the throttle faster?
Thanks!
