put the transmission in the highest gear you've got and then give it a shot...

I have a tool for removing rear cassette (sprocket) from bicycle wheels, basically it is a length of chain with an handle on one end. Wrap it round the sprocket and brace the handle against the turning force.

Like this; X-Tools Chain Whip | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com

Should be easy to make something similar if you have a chain?

The best way to avoid bending output shafts and so on is to use a pneumatic impact wrench. This will not only easily undo the nut but also won't stress anything. You can even undo the nut with the gearbox in neutral.

Put chain around sprocket and clamp both ends together close to sprocket with large vise-grips, then let them rest against crankcase.
