748/999 Engine transplant help...
Hey guys...
I have used the "search" function to no avail.
I am excited to have my hands on a 999s motor with deep sump and S cams. Came with the throttles and all. I have already started acquiring parts to put this motor into my 2001 748s!
I know how to handle the air box, throttle body fitment and exhaust... my problem is the computer setup. I am keeping the 1.6m and all the wiring. Can I reprogram my FIM chip? Do I need the TomTom chip? What about the choke on the 749/999... does that get deleted? What sensors get disconnected?
Can I use the newer 999 coil/wire design with the older computer setup?
Ya da ya da....
Any and all help would be great.
Thanks in advance!
Blake

Sounds like a fun build! Good luck with finding the answers you need. Keep us updated on the build.

Well, If you are not using a pcIII the chip I did will be fairly close, in that perspective its useful, but not a must.
748 eprom is fairly good as it is single injector and has a good ignition map for 999.
If you map it correctly it wont matter if tps is linear or not, it just points at different places in the map at a given throttle opening.
All connectors will fit but;
-TPS, just resolder with the proper connector, check that you have high resistance with butterflies closed and little resistance at wot, if not swap the cables, its just a simple potentiometer in the end.
-Gauge temp sensor (single wire), weld a new bung somewhere in the returning cooling water, important is it needs to be grounded or else it wont work.
-Fan switch (Big white), all it does is ground when a certain temp is reached, just mount a manual switch instead.
999 coils can be used but you MUST ground them or it will run crap blow 5-ish.

Hmm, this intrigues me. Just stumbled on a low mile deep sump '05 999s motor on ebay with radiator and oil cooler. My 748 motor needs belts, rockers and a valve adjustment and I need a radiator and plumbing anyway for it as well. Been thinking about venturing into testa motor territory to avoid future hassle with the desmo nonsense.
It doesn't seem like there's TOO much involved in such a swap here. Make's me wonder if I should just snag the 999s motor while I have the chance. I have a PCIII as well that came with my bike, I imagine that might make tuning easier?
duc_duc, if you don't mind me asking what did you snag your 999s motor for, and how complete was it when you got it? Just trying to get a figure on what a good price would be.

I tend to agree, its not really difficult, its more like a lot of small things that needs attention, so make sure you have plenty of time and patience and you will make it no problem. Its a lot like knitting, not really hard, but patience and a mental flight and youre there. Not that I really know knitting but you can see the glow in their eyes, and to a posing person it would seem silly, but its not.
And looking back having great friends to help you with constructing, designing, figuring things out, drinking beer and irritating is priceless, its a group activity in its best form if you ask me

Tom,
Thanks so much for you much needed input...!
I am doing it... so there is no turning back. I have my eyes on a 998 airbox. My buddy is a blacksmith and will help with the 998 header to 748 pipe graft... only because of the deep sump.
I got a full bike... lightly laid down on the right side. So light... I rode it for 2 days. It could have easily been fixed but the insurance totaled it. A good price for these motors IMO would be in the $1200-$1700 range. I got mine for $700 with throttles and all little things needed.
I will post pics as they come...

No worries, 748R to 998S is minus 6 kilos, we had a local guy that had a 748R and just swapped all stuff over to the 998s and minus 6kg was the difference, nice, with plenty more power aswell.
Its so well setup here with connections, sweden is the second largest ducati club in the world, unless you already knew.
And I can see why, because we have a winter long enough to fix them

So... Worked a bit tonight. Getting the motor ready. Cleaning every inch. Pic 1 is going into pic 2!
I love Mothers mag polish. It cleans cases so well... then follow up with protectall spray polish and wax. Looks new.
