1098S really rough and sometimes stalls...
Ok, bought a 1098S to go along side my 748 a few weeks back.
I am enjoying it however I have one serious problem with it that is driving me up the wall...
It is a nightmare to start, it will take 3 attempts from cold, sometimes it backfires during this process.
Once started, it runs like a dog below 5k revs, anything above and it becomes smooth(er).
Sometimes if you blip the throttle at lights it just dies out (the idle is around 1100-1200rpm, my 748 sits at 1100 so surely it must be lower?). Moving off is very tricky as well, it's really lumpy until you go past 5k rpm which is just painful in a town. It jutters all over the place below.
Not sure if this is anything to worry about, but a full tank will only give me 60 miles until the fuel light comes on, this is on a hard ride however...
Other than that it is spot on in the twisties! So very fast compared to the 748. And really is glued to the road in the bends!

Welcome to the joy of owning a 1098. Most owners experience all the things you have going on. Have throttle bodies sync'd up adjust air screws and address the low end fueling issues on the bike and will feel like a new machine. A reflashed ecu (available from several sources on here) will be the best $250-$300 ever spent on that bike. If you want to spend more money for more adjustment you can either do a piggyback fueling unit or replacement ecu. Don't give up on the bike yet, it's a joy to ride once running right.

Oh that's not fun to hear haha.
I am fairly mechanically savvy, I know the 748 inside and out, always done my own servicing on it. However, never messed with fuelling or anything like that (aside from that tiny idle adjuster screw in the ECU).
I have yet to get a paddock stand for the 1098, once I have one, I will be stripping the bikes fairings off and getting a good old look in their, is there anything I can do without any special tools to do as you mentioned above?
I do need to grease up the throttle body springs, it's rather stiff and sticks. So may as well try a few things whilst I am there.
Which brings me on to another thing, it's all on the wrong side! Took off the RH fairing over the weekend to have a little play, only to be greeted by nothing! All on the LH side
Cheers

You know I have never checked to be honest chap. Will have a check on the weekends ride.
I cant check the oil level until I get a paddock stand as well due to not trusting the family to sit on the bike long enough whilst I check it haha.
The dealership I bought the bike from did do a full service on the bike before handing it over. So I would have thought it should be ok.

Also, where is the bloody ECU located? Might stick on the OEM one and remove the termi one to see if that helps for the time being?

left side, right under the battery. don't forget about the ground wire on it when you put it back.
oh, and as far as your gas mileage goes, that seems a bit low. i get about 90-100 miles in town before the light comes on with my 1198.

Also cam timing seems to make a pretty big difference on the stalling issues. If you have a dpecu already you might want to look into a powercommander, bazzazz or some other piggyback device. While the dpecu is an improvement over stock it leaves alot to be desired. The dpecu seems to run pretty rich in some areas and that might be the reason for some of your poor gas mileage. It also depends on how you ride. If you ride moderate to hard 60-75 miles is normal for fuel light. If Im on the highway and cruising between 70-80 mph I can get 90-100mph before light comes on. Be careful with the fuel levels on the bike, they run out at like 115-120 miles on a tank. Don't ask how others and myself know this. The fuel capacity listed is not correct and after pushing bike to gas station on a couple of occasions I've only been able to pump in about 3.5 gallons. Did I mention yet that these bikes are a SHIT LOAD OF FUN?

Haha, I agree, it's soooo much fun, just seems like in terms of running and fuel, it's a step back from my 748?
I will speak to the garage I bought it from tomorrow and book it in whilst I am in India for 3 weeks during february.
I checked the ECU, it is infact the one supplied with the termi's. It looks as though the stock ecu and o2 meter were taken off from day 1, don't even look as though they saw more than 5 miles so the previous owner must have been riding it like this for all 12000 miles! haha.
Anyway, a PC is going to cost ALOT, so that will be a investment that I will only consider if worst comes to worst.
