Old 916 tach help needed
I took my original 1995 916 out for a ride today after a long layoff. The tach registers 0 revs at idle, and then quickly moves to 6000 revs at almost every other throttle setting. Technician's tests indicate the problem is in the tach itself. Any known fixes or leads on a good repair service? I'm in California's Central Coast, it that matters. Or if someone has a same-vintage 916 tach, that would be another option. Thanks for the help.

Try tightening the 3 brass screws on the back of the housing. That resolved the fluctuating reading on my '95........

I thought (and I could be wrong, Im three vodkas in...) that was an indicator for some Voltage problem? The tach swings from zero to 6K, then back to Zero?
I may be confusing it with my YZF750, but I will dig up my service manual and see if I am misleading you or not?

Tach issue
If I'm correct, all the '95 916's used the P-8 computer, so any later tachs won't work as the internal circuit boards are different. I've had similar issues with mine where a solder connection was broken inside. The only way to take it apart is to get the bezel off to get to the insides.
Other than that, your left side engine cover has two sensors, a rpm/tach sensor, and a separate cam timing sensor. Check the depth gap on the tach sensor and ohm resistance to make certain it's good.
