Is it possible to get a little more noise from stock mufflers?
I am having a hard time justifying spending 1.5-2 grand just to get a little more noise out of my stock 749 pipes. Has anyone taken a drill or anything and opened up the mufflers a little without doing major surgery? I am not looking for a huge increase in noise, but some would be great.
thanks
Kurt

I met someone on a ride recently who had taken to his 748 stock can with a drill. The thing sounded like it had more grunt and definitely made more noise than my $AU4K Termi's. I guess it can be done but you will need someone else to tell you how :-)

I had my cans opened up, baffles removed and replaced with "race baffles".
Sounded great but too much for the stock map. Stuck a chip in it and its run fine for the last 12k. I did it seven years ago so I don't remember the specifics. cost- ~$400 in 99'.
I like it because it not only sounds mean but looks stock, except when viewed from the rear.
A good shop should be able to handle this.
Hope this helps.
Jack

There was a website (I dont think its open anymore) it covered "the ducati pipe mod" Which was for Monsters and 916 series exhaust coring. If you search this forum you will find many topics covering coring exhaust. I have yet to see any site or a post that covers the 999 series exhaust coring. I looked at my 749 can and could do it, but its not worth my time or headache. Plus I like the look of the aftermarket cans, in either CF or Ti.

I actually like the look of the 748's 2 cans better too, but a 748 is a 748 and for better or worse, a 749 is a 749. I want to keep the 749 looking like a 749. Ducati put a lot of effort into that exhaust, it was not just 2 cans stuck on the end of a pipe. I think in the long run, esp if the 1098 goes back to cans, these exhausts will be viewed as part of the art of the 749/999, and such an important part of the look that it should not be violated. I think everyone agrees the 4 light "spider" front posted recently should not have been done to such a beautiful bike. But to each his own.

I put Remus cans on my 749, since they look and sound better than the stock design. You can keep a 749 looking like a 749 with a shoebox bolted to it if you like.
If you want to make a stock 749 can sound good you need to get your sawzall and welder out. You cant core one without a Sawzall and MIG welder, at the minimum. I would use a Plasma cutter and TIG.
So either man up with your tools, or pay $2500 for a Termi shoebox can design. BTW I paid about 1k for my Remus, which sounds 10 times better than a Termi.
Also my pipe changes were for performance in the canyons or on the track, not to impress the cats sitting outside Starbucks. So with a pipe change also takes some tuning to the motor to make it work.

Spoke to a fellow rider who suggested that one of the muffler shops can do this. Again, it comes down to how much they will charge versus buying a termi or other 3rd party can.
I remember looking at all options when I learned of the price for termi pipes in Australia (we are getting ripped off down here!!!!) and finally just went ahead with them.
Agree that this is part of the bike design and I wanted to retain it's integrity. I had a 916 in the past so why do I want to make my 749 look like it?

I agree the Remus look good, and I suspect you are saving a few pounds too. Wish I could have my cake and eath it too.
