Question 996 Rear Wheel Locator Holes/Pins...

2000 996.

When I bought my bike it had new tires and evidently whoever put the wheel back on didnt torque it properly. The nut was loose one day upon pre-ride inspection.

I since had the rear off a couple times and while i dont have calipers, I can see that, upon close inspection, that the locator holes in my wheel are slightly ovaled, only by a few thousandths of an in. it seems. Small step on two of the sides of the Int. diameter of the holes. Enough so that when putting the wheel on with the nut hand tight, there is a small amount of play in the wheel when holding the rear brake with my hand and moving the wheel forward and back (rotation). What I consider a pretty small amount.

So! >>> How tight do the locator pins on the hub have to be in the wheel holes and is my minor damage within limits?? Its not obvious to the naked eye looking at the holes that they are out of round, but there's a little bit of a step on two sides of the inner diameter upon close inspection, appropriate to the way the wheel rotates.
>> With the proper torque now (130 ft lbs) am I ok to ride without further deforming these holes??
>> Do those pins just act as locators or do they help hold the wheel from spinning freely even with the proper torque on the nut?? (Is there a load on them from acceleration/braking ???)

If I have to have them drilled out and bushings pressed in, How much and do you think Fast by Ferracci (close by) could do it?

Lots of question, thanks for help in advance!!!
Take care!

I had this problem when my bike was new - the rear wheel had not been tightened enough. Not only did it oval the holes in the wheel it also ovaled the pin locating holes in the hub and broke a couple of pins. Fortunately mine was sorted out under warranty.

I don't know if any play is acceptable (otherwise it'll damage the pins) but if your pins are OK then you could fix (or replace cheaply if OEM) the wheel.

One thing I have noticed on my Marchesini wheel is that it has double the number of locating holes so I could use either set - it may be easier to get another set of holes drilled between the existing, any decent machine shop could do this (don't do it with a hand drill - perfect accuracy would be required) this would save fitting bushings and have the useful side effect of lightening the wheel.

Curious, how much is a stock Marchesini 5 spoke rear wheel (charcoal silver)???

The pins seem ok, tight and all... though there is some wear on the two sides of the pins that contact the i.d. of the holes in the wheel...Very minor, but you could tell where the contact was made. I'm hoping thats from the short time that the nut was loose and not over time after I tightened it.

Any other thoughts on the limits of "ovalness" of the holes in the wheel?

Thank you DukeDesmo, any other info from anyone is also appreciated!!!
Take care!
