Buying my first Duc (used). Need advice!
I’ve been lurking this forum for a long time, and I’m FINALLY going to get my first Duc. With that being said, I need some advice.
I’m about to buy a 2000 748S with close to 9000 miles on it. It has a Termi exhaust and the 5 spoke Marchesini rims on it. It also has the following carbon fiber pieces: key guard, heel guards, chain and rear fender guard, sprocket cover and clutch cover. Clean title, never laid down. He claims to have had all services done right up to the 8k mile point.
Price: $6000
Is this a good deal?
Did all the S models have the white tail? This one doesn’t.
Is there anything I should look for?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ask the owner if the opening rocker arms were checked and replaced if flaking. Most likely there were some flaking opening rockers.

That is a good question to ask. Also to make sure that the bike was not down check inside the fairings for taps that hook up under the front cowel. They are easy to break.
Check the chain and front sproket
Check the rear wheel and make sure it's not damaged and check the pins that the wheels slides onto (you need to take it off) TQ back on to 100lb
Make sure the wiring was not messed around with. I just got a 916 and I'm going through the hack job the other owner did just to get the stock plate off and intergrate the rear brake light and turns light.

Thanks for all the advice!
I'll definitely check all those things out.
Is there anyway to check if the bike is truely an S model, not just a 748 with Marchesinis on it?
Isn't the tail supposed to be white, or was that just an option?

If you look at the S model head tube, you'll see an adjustable setup. The adjustable setup has a pin inside a tube on the side that locks the offset collars. I'll see if I can find a picture.
The Ohlins (if there is such on the 2000, I don't remember) can be added, as can the quarter-turn bodywork fasteners.
the S model didn't all have a white tail.
You can find bike value in your area at www.kbb.com or www.nada.com

Just as a "heads up" you have a 12K service not to far in your future too.

That's a VERY good price, if it's in good shape. I paid $6700 for mine 2 years ago and it's not an S.
I'd work a deal so that you'll buy it contingent on an inspection and you'll pay for a rocker inspection and valve clearance check, but he pays for any repairs that are needed (new rocker arms?, etc.). If he won't do that offer him $400 less.
Some here say the rockers are now about $75 each and Ducati will pay if a Ducati dealer does the work. He might not be out any money.
