According to Haynes:
Different cylinder head
Bigger valves
Raised compression ratio
Ti connecting rods
Uprated clutch assembly
P8 Weber-Marelli system with dual fuel injectors per cylinder (Strada has one per cylinder)
22hp over Strada
Ohlin's shock
Cast iron brake rotors
Braided steel brake lines
Carbon fibre silencers
Carbon fibre body panels
There is no mention of a 955cc displacement; later SPS models were 996cc, but according to the manual the SP was still a 916cc.

HP numbers for those Ducs are notoriously unreliable, but this is what the manual states:
916 Strada 97hp
916 SPS (996) 124hp
996 Biposto 113hp
996 SPS 123hp
I would venture a guess that it would be around 110-115 at the wheel for the SP. If anyone knows better please correct me.

Ya the claims are off my 748 is 97 and my 916 is 105 yet the 916 is stupid fast compared to the 748. Less then a 10hp I don't think so. I bet the Ducati tech just guess basied on what number suits their liking.

Ducati made a limited number (54) of a model designated 916 SPA (Sport Production America) in 1996. It was made to homologate the 955cc motor for AMA Superbike racing and thus displaced 955cc.
Even though Ducati brought 50 into the USA, many were sent to other countries after the homologation requirement was met.

A more accurate comparison would be the original claim of 114hp for the 916... 105 was a later claim, and is closer to the rear wheel HP but lower than the crank power. 97 is the peak crank hp of the 748.
Generally a stock 748 will put out between 80-90 at the rear wheel, a 916 95-105. The 748 isn't that far off in power, but it also revs higher (and flakes the rocker arms more easily) and has less midrange which makes it feel a lot less powerful than the 916.
