KTM 990 SMT to take on Multistrada 1200?
Although much has been made of the impending Adventure tourer war between Ducati’s new Multistrada 1200 and the head honcho of the class, BMW’s R1200 GS, a comparison of the two shows they really have little in common and different ends in mind. No, the new Italian for all roads and riders has more in common with the Triumph Tiger and KTM 950 SMT than its Bavarian foe. Details here.
I love the sound of the new (for the US) KTM 990 SMT but for those considering a Multi12, what else is on your cross shopping list?

As someone who has logged lots of miles on a KTM 950SM (18k miles) and a 950 Adventure (8k and counting), both on road and off, I sure would like to do a back to back comparison of the Multi and the SMT...two brothers from different mothers!

The KTM 990 SMT has 116 hp compared to Ducati 1200 which has 150. The KTM hasen't TCS nor different modes. The finish isn't as good as Ducati and there are reports of engine quality problems; clutch & top gaskets. The serviceintervall is 7500km but it is recommended to change oil in between if you are ridning it as meant to.
The KTM is cheaper but the Ducati is the better buy imho.

Bullshit. I spend a lot of time in the KTM world and would have known all about that.

That remains to be seen.

I don't mean to get all defensive of KTM, but that was such a BS post. My point was the two bikes do compare very favorably, which is what Whippersnapper's blog was all about. Buy whichever one you like better...you can't go wrong!

The Ducati has more power. I just pointed that out. The KTM is more a competitor to Tiger.
No, thats not only my opinion. Cheap plastics, ugly weldning, bad paint etc. I have seen it on several samples.
The problems I mentioned was taken from Swedens biggest Motorbike magazine and was a summary of problems with LC8 engine. This info was given to the magazine from resellers.

Maybe it time to service your bike then. The new multi is 1200km between service.
And the oilchange in between, again take from the Magazine who have got the info from KTM resellers net in Sweden and based upon their experience about this model.
BS?

Yep, you're right. KTM's are slow, poorly built POS's and you shouldn't buy one. I will.
...like clapping with one hand around here anymore...

I can not understand why you would be the moderator on a Ducati forum. Did the KTM forum already have too many mods? Seriously, it is a Ducati forum, I would expect and welcome a Ducati is king sentiment here.
