Long Range Bike?
Hi,
I own a Monster S2R, which I love.
A good friend of mine who owns a BMW GS Adventure bike claims that Ducati's, even the Multistrada, will not stand up to true long range trips.
His buddy, who rides the Iron Butt competitions, told him that Ducati's are known in the mototrcycle community as not being able to withstand being pushed hard on long range trips. His buddy claims it's well documented that Ducati engines will explode if pushed hard for long distances unlike BMW, Honda, or any other metric bike.
This sounds like total BS to me and I'm insulted by his comment. Oh by the way, my friends BMW GS motor blew up near the end of his last 11 day trip to Colorado. He only had 9000 miles on it.
Are there any MultiStrada riders out there that ridden long distances with no engine problems?
Ara

I love beemers, still have my old airhead. but your beemer friend might check what make holds the record from alaska to florida. Ducati Multistrada! Gary Egan rider.
that photo of the blown rear drive is not an anomoly. check the BMW forums and you will find many posts about such.
I haven't done any real long distance on my multi so far. 1500 miles is the longest single trip. no problems at all. I even went the speed limit a couple of times on that trip. well, maybe not.

I know that the GS series are great bikes, but so many of them are like the 4WD SUV's you see going to the grocery store. the only time they ever go into 4wd is on a ski trip and they never see dirt roads. a while back I was coming up a one lane dirt road and met a couple of GS riders. a twin and a single. matching colors and riding gear. they were turning around at the end of the pavement. what a joke.
sunday I gave a ride to a coworker who has a gravel driveway. both of her vehicles are 4wd. she asked if she needed to meet me somewhere 'cause her driveway was too steep and rough for motorcycles. I told her it would be no problem for me. when i pulled up at her house, she was ready to go wearing a Harley helmet! should have known why she thought no motocycle could make it!

I picked up my MTS 1000S three weeks ago, put 700 miles on it in two weeks and had the first service done, and then spent last week riding 1500 miles in West Virginia and Virginia. No problems whatsoever.

Great pic dartfrog. Anybody who knows BMW's, knows the GS drive shaft will strand you on any long trip. I've even seen it with my own eyes.
BMW's reliability days died when they discontinued the R80gs.
As for the DUC, take care of it, it will take care of you.

Parev Ara:
The GS is fine. I just sold one with 136K miles on it and wouldn't have hesitated going to Alaska with it.
Just keep the maintenance schedule. Yeah you friend's buddy is full of K...
